Pleasant Hill church celebrates 130 years
Pictured are, left to right, the Revs. Shawntay Owens, K.M.
Williams, Bob Uzzel and Michelangelo Clark.
On Sunday, Oct. 13, Pleasant Hill
Baptist Church in Whitney—the sister
church to Wayman Chapel AME
Church in Ennis — celebrated their
130th Church Anniversary and Home-
coming. Bro. Kenneth Rayford served
as master of ceremonies. Pulpit devo-
tion was conducted by the host pastor
the Rev. Michelangelo Clark. The occa-
sion and welcome was extended by the
Rev. Shantay Owens. Following a con-
gregational song, a church poem was
read by Sis. Andrea Nelson. A solo was
sung by Sis. Emma Phillips. The dea-
cons took up the offering. Sis. Barbara
Rhodes then told the history of the
church. Following music by the Rev.
K.M. Williams, the Texas Country
Blues Preacher and associate pastor of
Wayman Chapel AME Church in
Ennis, the writer of this article brought
the Homecoming message about
Melchizedek. My text was Hebrews 7:1-
28. The sermon was followed by invita-
tion to Christian discipleship, remarks,
and benediction.
Pleasant Hill Baptist Church was or-
ganized in 1883, with the name selected
as a result of its location on a hill sur-
rounded by pleasant air. At the time, the
city of Whitney was four years old. The
organ ization of the church involved the
merger of three congregations. One of
these was located at Towash and met in
a log cabin. A second was located at
Lofer’s Bend, while a third, which in-
cluded a number of members of the
Anderson family met at an unknown lo-
cation, The Towash church, which was
organized in 1869 by the Revs. WA.
Mason and S.E. Brooks, was the first
black Baptist congregation in Hill
County It is possible that the three
churches came together when the rail-
road was built.
In 1894, Pleasant Hill’s original build-
ing was demolished and the present ed-
ifice was built. In 1900, trustees Jim
Thomas, Andrew McCabe, and J. W
Bartlett purchased the property for $10
from the pioneer Texas psychiatrist Dr.
D.R. Wallace of Waco. In 1907, the
church had approximately 100 mem-
bers. On July 17,1966, the church build-
ing was rededicated. At the time, a
Masonic cornerstone was leveled by
Excelsior Lodge No. 376, A.F. & A.M. of
Waco. At the time, Green Moss and
Irine Williams were serving as deacons,
while Victor Thomas was serving as a
trustee.
Pleasant Hill pastors have included
the Revs. J.M. Parker, R.L. McGenty,
Dukin, Elijah Hooker, Hemphill, Wil-
son, Keunard Steptoe, Lensley Manni-
gia, C.B. Shepherd, Celon Petty William
Gale, William Lott, WG. Jones, C.T. 01-
lison, O.C. Mark, Richard Manning,
Willie Copeland, David Harris, Feldon
Black, David Lewis, Calvin Bell, Shawn-
tay Owens, and Michelangelo Clark.
Today the Pleasant Hill displays pho-
tographs of Dr. Wallace, who died in
1911; and the following outstanding
church members: Jim Thomas, who
died in 1914; W L. Thomas, who died in
1992; and Hermann Hicks, who died in
1993.
I first attended Pleasant Hill’s Home-
coming on Oct. 8,1972, during my pas-
torate at the Whitney Missionary
Baptist Church. I remember that the
building was filled to capacity, with
standing room only Over the years, I
have attended many services at this
beloved church, including the dedica-
tion of the Texas State Historical
Marker in May 1998. I hope and pray
that Pleasant Hill will experience such
growth that other standing-room-only
services can be held in the future.
The Rev. Bob Uzzel is pastor of Way-
man Chapel AME Church in Ennis.
