Eagles landing at memorial
Nick Todaro
nick@ennisdailynews. com
The Ennis Veterans Memorial has another
update in store in the coming weeks.
Buddy Markham, who helps coordinate work
on the project alongside committee chairman
Larry Fincher, reported the city has given its
approval for the installation of a pair of bronze
eagles at the memorial on Ennis Parkway on top
of columns erected by the flagpoles.
Fundraisers are on tap, unless, as Markham
said, somebody wants “to step up and finish” the
project.
The memorial and the park that houses it have
been a community project in Ennis since at least
2010, with the memorial opening for the public
during the Memorial Day weekend this year.
“Right now, the park does not have an eagle,”
Markham said. “The bald eagle is the symbol of
our country. We thought of putting one in flying
or landing position in the Battlefield Cross area,
but we came up with an idea to have them sitting
on the columns.”
Help out
The Ennis Veterans Memorial Committee
is working on installation of two bronze
eagles at the memorial at Ennis Memorial
Park. For more nformation, call Larry
Fincher at 214-577-5756 at 214-577-5756,
e-mail ennisvmp@yahoo.com or search
Ennis Veteran on Facebook.
Organizers worked with the bronze artist who
crafted the Battlefield Cross and bronze plaques
at the memorial to cast the eagles. Markham said
the installation will make the eagles look as
though they “guard” the park, and could be one
of the final touches the committee works out.
“Any time you think of the military of the
United States, you think about the bald eagle,” he
said.

Ennis police arrested two
men Sunday after they were
seen leaving a reported 40-per-
son brawl in the Super 1 Foods
parking lot.
Sgt. Mike Hopson of the
Ennis Police Department said
officers responded to reports
of a fight involving roughly 40
people with shots fired at 1205
W. Ennis Avenue. Upon
arrival, all of the reported
participants had fled the
scene.
Investigators found three
spent 9mm shell casings in the
parking lot,
as well as one
9mm bullet.
An off
duty police
officer told
police he saw
a pickup
truck that
had left the
scene with
two of the
fight’s alleged participants
inside. Hopson said. He said
Officer Brian Shahan eventu-
ally found and pulled over the
truck, which had bloodstains
on the outside.
Shahan arrested the two
men in the truck, 19-year-old
Hugo Machuca and 18-year-
old Martin Noriega-Ibarra of
Waxahachie. Machuca was
arrested on warrants out of
Waxahachie and Ellis County,
while Noriega-Ibarra was
arrested pending charges of
no drivers’ license and disor-
derly conduct.
Hopson said investigators
have two other suspects they
plan to arrest in the coming
days. He said there were no
reports of any gunshot vic-
tims brought into Ennis
Regional Medical Center that
would correspond to Sunday
night’s incident.

Girls Club, served as mayor from 1986 to 1990 and city com-
missioner from 1991 to 2012. He declined to run in the May
election, instead endorsing current Ward 3 commissioner
Jess Haupt.
