Billy Ray Hancock
Hancock
Billy Ray Hancock grew up in Waxahachie
and is a life-long Ellis County resident. In the
1970s he assisted in the effort to obtain a his-
torical marker for the Marvin Elementary
School. His interest in local history was
spurred by that accomplishment and it wasn't
long after that he became involved in the Wax-
ahachie High School Junior Historians, a time
when he was also teaching history at Waxa-
hachie High School.
From 1977-1981, the Waxahachie High
School Junior Historians published an annual
booklet featuring articles about Ellis County's
history. Hancock was a sponsor of the Junior
Historians along with Gaylord French, Benton
Cain and Ruth DeVore. Hancock is still an ac-
tive researcher, writer and historian.
Recently he decided he wanted to combine
the (now rare) previous publications into one
volume and reprint them for interested parties
to enjoy today and to provide a historical doc-
ument for future historians. Hancock and his
family sponsored the reprinting in memory of
the late Mrs. Hancock and donated the books
to the Ellis County Museum to sell in its gift
shop with all proceeds benefiting the mu-
seum. The Ellis County Museum thanks Han-
cock for his continued generosity and support
and looks forward to additional projects in the
future. The cost of the book is $20.
February Brown Bag at the Ellis County Mu-
seum will feature Elmerine Bell on Thursday,
Feb. 27 from noon to 1 p.m. Bell will discuss
the “The Remnants of St. Mary Cemetery” lo-
cated on Hughes Cemetery Road between
Italy and Avalon.
