Thursday Already! In Tenaha
Voice of Doyce
Oh, where does the time go?
Completely missed last week
and this week almost got me.
Deadline by Tuesday seems to
come mighty early.
We are still getting input on
the “Clean Sweep” we had here
on the Tenaha Square. To you
students that participated, I am
relaying to you all the “Thank
Yous” that City Hall received on
your behalf. Lets do it again.
Incumbents were re-elected
on the TISD Board. Congratu-
lations to Bo Morris, Carl
Jernigan, and Carolyn Hooker
as they start three year terms.
Chip Roberson elected to fill a
one year unexpired term. They
will be sworn in at meeting May
23, 2006. Last night, City of
Tenaha incumbents George
Bowers and Albert Burns were
sworn in with newcomer Mark
Hixson completing the slate of
councilmembers. Mayor Bow-
ers is officially the longest pres-
ently serving Mayor in the State
of Texas. The council elected
Mark Hixson as Mayor Pro-
Tem. The council expressed ap-
preciation to Gladies Samuels
for serving in the remainder of
her husband’s term.
Wet carpet has been partially
removed at City Hall. We had
water come in from the back
during one of our recent down-
pours. Lots of prep work needs
to be done to the floors. New
flooring materials have been or-
dered and I would think in a
couple of weeks, you can come
by City Hall and see what is new.
Our church was packed this
past Sunday with it being
Mother’s Day. So many children
and grandchildren made a special
effort to be with their Moms on
this day. I am sure that it was high
attendance at all the churches.
We also had baby dedication dur-
ing our morning services. Josiah
Menefee and Molly Scull were
presented along with their par-
ents. After services, we joined my
brother for lunch at the Whistle
Stop. He wanted to treat me on
Mother’s Day. Sandra and Hollis
Pitts ate with us also. Hollis is
related to Bo and me. It was so
good to catch up on their chil-
dren. They are grandparents just
once, but will have two more
in the near future. It was so
good to see them.
Birthday greetings to Jim
Cunningham, Jimmy
McDaniel, Steve Adams, Gail
Bownds, Matthew Bums, and
Kaitlyn Wagstaff this week.
High school graduation is
scheduled for May 26. At the
appointed time that night our on
going Project Graduation will
be held in the gym. This over
night activity will possibly be
the last time the graduating
class will all be together. This
makes the thirteenth all-night,
chemical-free celebration that
provides our graduates with a
safe and memorable night. If

TENAHA FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH NEWS
By Martha Brennion Nease_Tenaha Municipal Court Judge
Open Hearts, Open
Minds, Open Doors
Tenaha First United Meth-
odist Church met on the Fifth
Sunday of Easter, May 14,
2006. The regular service
times are Sunday School at
10:00am with the Worship ser-
vice at 10:45am. Choir re-
hearsal is between Sunday
School and the Worship ser-
vice. If you do not have a
church home, come visit our
church, see if we are the home
for you.
The Introit sung by the choir
was “My Tribute” (To God Be
The Glory). The hymns were
“I Need Thee Every Hour”,
“Jesus Is All The World To
Me”, “I Am Thine, O Lord”
and “Take My Life, and Let It
Be”. The scripture was John
15: 1-8. The sermon was titled
“Happy Pills and Other Un-
truths”. Jesus speaks the truth
about the Christian life, indi-
vidually and corporately. He
does not gloss over the diffi-
culties of such life or offer an
escape of any kind. What he
does offer is presence in the
midst of all circumstances and
the life-giving, if sometimes
pain-inducing, love of God.

Upcoming events:
The United Methodist
Women meet at 10:00am on the
1st and 3rd Tuesday of each
month. Even Pastor Bradley
gets confused on the dates, so
here are upcoming dates =
May 16 and June 6th.
The monthly Board Meet-
ings are on the 1st Wednesday
of each month. July ’s date will
be July 5th.
Tenaha FUMC Men’s
prayer breakfasts are the 1st
Sunday of each month. Any
man in the Tenaha community
interested in Christian fellow-
ship is welcome. June’s date

Monthly fellowships are on
the 2nd Wednesday of each
month. June’s date is June

Tenaha law enforcement will
be cracking down on the curfew.
There are kids hanging out late
at night. We realize school will
be out soon. There have recently
been complaints from local busi-
nesses and from residents. There
is a park in the “Quarters”. Any-
one utilizing that park needs to
be considerate of the residents in
the area. A great many young
people (not just school age) are
forgetful that older adults often
go to bed very early. No one
likes their sleep to be disturbed
by noise and commotion. People
of all ages need to take pride in
their community. When you take
pride you do not throw out your
trash on the streets. When you
take pride you are considerate of
others and are not selfish - think-
ing only of your self. The young
people are the future of a com-
munity, older people need to be
a positive guide. Being a posi-
tive guide is not just talk but also
being active with young people.
William Weeks has been
working some at King’s nursery.
He does whatever is needed. It
is nice to get to see him some in
Tenaha besides at church.
Don and I have Dish Network
to receive more televisions
shows than from an antenna.
Without the antenna we lost all
of our Texas stations. I am start-
ing a personal campaign for Dish
to offer Texas residents some
Texas stations. The Shreveport
stations do include some Texas
news but I am sick of Shreveport
crime, Louisiana news and Loui-
siana politics. If you feel the
same way I do, e-mail them at
dish@echostar.com . Send
something like: I want some
Texas stations for my local sta-
tions! I live in Texas, not in
Louisiana. I am tired of Louisi-
ana news, Shreveport crime and
Louisiana politics. How about
Lufkin/Nacogdoches area sta-
tions or Tyler/Longview area sta-
tions? Either area would be more
local news and Texas news, the
Nacogdoches/Lufkin area possi-
bly would have the most local
news of interest to my area. Dal-
las/Ft. Worth area stations or
Houston area stations would at
least be Texas news.
Lufkin/Nacogdoches stations:
KHTM - TV 13, KIBN - TV
11, KLSB - NBC - 53, KFXL
- FOX - 30, KLSB - TV 19,
KLUF-TV5, KTRE-TV9
Tyler/ Longview stations:
KETK - TV REGION 56,
KFXK-TV. KLTV-CHAN-
NEL 7.
If enough of us Texas sub-
scribers request access to some
Texas stations maybe we will get
some.

talked with some of them and
they reported fun, fun, fun.
Bear is still alive. I just wish
you could push a button and his
behavior would improve. As I
have mentioned before, he is an
inside/outside dog. He thinks the
members of our house are his
play toys. He wants out but he
wants us out with him. He would
prefer me finding another place
to sit in the living room as my
recliner has become his place of
occupancy since he got strong
enough to climb up in it. I am
calling him “Wild One” now.
The only place he can hide from
us is under our bed and he is to
such a size that he has to crawl
flat and squirm around when he
wants out. Give him a few more
weeks and that hiding place will
be non-existant. If we had ac-
cess to a sound system piped
throughout our house, I would
want it to just repeat “No” “No”
“No”.
Have you ever seen such
beautiful gardens? I would
imagine in the near future ripe
tomatoes will be available. I
have seen some of the finest
plants and they are just loaded
down with hand size fruit. I
cooked some squash last night
and it was so good. Has been a
plentiful crop of berries thus far
this year. I have not been berry
picking just yet. Maybe my tame
berry plants will have enough to
make a cobbler. Several of us
want to make wild plum jelly
this year so if you know where
those trees are, let me know.
Time just runs out. I had best
close. See you in church.

It is time to start thinking
about attending family/cemetery
reunions. If you know the upcom-
ing date for a reunion please con-
tact me so I can help get the word
out. Most reunions are scheduled
for lunch time with a short busi-
ness meeting before lunch. Ev-
eryone is asked to bring a potluck
lunch that is enough to feed their
family, then everyone partakes of
what is available. I have never
seen one of these homecoming/re-
unions run out of food. I am try-
ing to include information on all
of the cemetery homecomings and
reunions as many of us have ties
to several different cemeteries or
family reunions. I have ties or
have attended at least 5 different
homecoming/reunions.

KNOW
STROKE
KNOW WHAT?
East Texans are more
likely to die from stroke
than our neighbors in
other parts of the state. *
That's why
ETMC wants you
to KNOW STROKE.
KNOW THE RISK FACTORS.
Some risk factors are unavoidable, such as being male, having diabetes,
being over 55, having a family history of stroke, or being African-
American. Other risk factors can be controlled:
• Cigarette smoking (doubles the risk) • Lack of physical activity
• Being overweight or obese • Poor nutrition
• High cholesterol • High blood pressure
• Excessive alcohol consumption • Circulation problems
KNOW THE SIGNS.
If you know what to watch for, you can help get appropriate care for
someone who may be having a stroke:
• Sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg -
especially on one side of the body
• Sudden confusion or trouble speaking or understanding speech
• Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
• Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance or coordination
• Sudden severe headache with no known cause
KNOW WHAT TO DO.
Call 911 immediately! A stroke means there is a blood clot or bleeding
in the brain. The sooner a person receives medical attention, the less
brain damage will occur and the better the chance for recovery.
KNOW WHERE TO GO.
ETMC has met rigorous standards to become the region's first certified
stroke center. ETMC professionals have extra training in all aspects of
stroke care and treatment to ensure the best possible outcomes for
people who suffer strokes.
