Bible
The Bible is the most read
book in the world. There is
much in the news today about
the public display of the Bible.
Let us look to the Bible for a defi-
nition. It is called: Book: Psa. 40:
7,8 “Then said I, Lo, I come in
the volume of the book it is writ-
ten of me, I delight to do thy will,
O my God, yea, thy law is within
my heart.” It is also called the
book in Rev. 22: 18,19 “For I tes-
tify unto every man that heareth
the words of the prophesy of
this book, If any man shall add
unto these things, God shall add
to him the plagues that are writ-
ten in this book. And if any man
shall take away from the words
the book of this prophecy, God
shall take away his part out of
the book of life, and out of the
holy city, and from the things
which are written in this book.”
Isa. 34: 16 “ Seek ye out of the
book of the Lord and read: no
one of these shall fail, none shall
want her mate for my mouth it
hath commanded and his spirit it
hath gathered them.” It is book
of Law: Neh. 8: 1-3 “And all the
people gathered themselves to-
gether as one man into the street
that was before the water gate,
and they spake unto Ezra the
scribe to bring the book of the
law of Moses which the Lord
commanded unto Israel. And the
priest brought the law before the
congregation both men and
women and all that could hear
with understanding, upon the
first day of the seventh month.
And he read therein before the
street that was before the water
gate from morning until midday,
before the men and women and
those that could understand and
the ears of all the people were
attentive unto the book of the
law.”
It is also called the God Word
of God. Heb. 6: 5 “ And have
tasted the good word of God and
the power of the world to come.”
It is called the scriptures. Rom. 1:
1,2 “Paul, a servant of Jesus
Christ, called to be an apostle,
separated unto the gospel of God
(which he promised afore by his
prophets in the holy scriptures.”
II Tim. 3:15
“And from a child thou hast
known the holy scriptures which
are able to make thee wise unto
salvation through faith which is
in Christ Jesus.’ The Bible is
called the oracles of God: Rom. 3:
1, 2 “What advantage then hath
the Jew? Or what profit is there
in circumcision? Much every
way: chiefly, because that unto
them were committed the oracles
of God.” I Pet. 4:11 “If any man
speak, let him speak as the
oracles of God...” It is also
called the scriptures. Dan. 10:
21
“But I will show thee that
which is noted in the scripture
of truth: and there is none that
holdeth with me in these things
but Michael your prince.” I Cor.
15; 3 “For I delivered unto you
first of all that which I also re-
ceived, how that Christ died for
our sins according to the scrip-
tures.” How can we be sure of
the scriptures? 2 Tim. 3: 16,17
“All scripture is given by inspi-
ration of God, and is good for
doctrine, for reproof, for in-
struction in righteousness; that
the man of God may be thor-
oughly furnished unto all good
works.” Next week we shall dis-
cuss other words that describe
the Bible.
and leave a message at the church
or parsonage.
The youth held a “Save Your
Labor” car wash on Labor Day,
Monday, September 6th. When
Don and I were there around 11:00
am, you had to wait in line to have
your car washed.
There was no charge for having
your car washed. The youth did
accept donations. The next
fundraiser for the youth will be to
have the concession stand for
Randy Whatley’s auction on Sat-
urday, September 11th. The auction
begins at 10:00.1 will probably last
5-6 hours. The youth are plan-
ning hamburgers, hot dogs, chips
and drinks. The first Sunday of
September was the Men’s Prayer
breakfast. Several of the regulars
were not present. In fact for the first
time in a long time they had left-
overs. Go ahead and put the break-
fast for October on your calendar.
It will be October 3rd. Brack Harrison
leads the cooking. Breakfast is
scheduled for 7:30 am. Come join
the men. Remember Sept. 8th the
second Wednesday of the month,
fellowship was Spaghetti dinner,
chicken as well as beef. We have
some picky eaters that do not eat
chicken. Dinner started at 6:30pm.
Prayer requests continue for
many individuals and families in
our community.
There were lots of additions to
the prayer list. Jean Parker’s brother
died. Julian Peddy is in the hospi-
tal. O’Neal Mitchell received a ter-
rible injury during the Tenaha foot-
ball came.
He and his family need to be in
everyone’s prayers. We also need
to pray for all the doctors and
health care providers involved in
his care.
A fund has been started for
Neal at Citizens State Bank.
Another young man, Popcorn,
has been diagnosed with diabetes.

(Continuation)
The majority of Jewish people
of Jesus’ day did not belong to
any movement. These were com-
mon peopl e, they were religious,
of course, but the fidelity to the
law demanded by the Pharisees
was beyond their reach. The ma-
jority looked upon the priests, the
wealthy aristocracy, and even to
some extent the scribes and
Pharisees as “others,” outsiders
to the world in which they lived.
It was from the common people
that Jesus and most of his fol-
lowers came.
Two structures were of deci-
sive importance in first century
AD Judaism: the Temple in
Jerusalem an the synagogues in
Palestine and in the Diaspora.
The Temple’s destruction in AD
70 would have dramatic conse-
quences for Jewish religious life
and, indirectly for Christian self-
understanding.
Jesus, being a layman, often
taught in synagogues (Lk. 4:15,
16 - 28, 6: 6, etc.), and attended
the Temple during the great pil-
grimage feasts during the year
(John 2: 1-13, John 6, John 7; 1-
13, etc.). The earliest members of
the Jesus movement in Jerusa-
lem continued this Temple atten-
dance for prayers and feasts on
regular basis (Acts 2:46). The
apostles enjoyed the protection
of some of the Pharisees, espe-
cially Gamaliel, Paul’s teacher
(Acts 5: 34-39). Unlike his
teacher, Paul persuaded the early
Church by collaborating with the
Sadducees. (Acts 9: 2.
The Jerusalem church did
little to spread the gospel out-
side their area. The first active
missionaries were the Hellenists
(Acts 6; 1-6) who were Diaspora
Jews living in Jerusalem. They
were Greek-speaking and heavily
influenced in Greek ways. They
shared with the natives the be-
lief that Jesus was Messiah and
that the end-times had dawned
in him. But at least some differed
in their attitude to the Temple,
they were critical of it because a
close association with the Temple
represented a narrow cultic na-
tionalism.
After the incident with
Stephen (Acts 6:8 - 7:600 there
began a persecution of the Hel-
lenists and they were almost to-
tally driven out of Jerusalem, this
left the city to the Hebrew believ-
ers, and this may explain why the
city became the center of the
more conservative Jewish Chris-
tian position in the coming de-
bates over the Gentile mission.
These Hellenists established
communities in Samaria and
Syria, most importantly Antioch.
After Paul’s experience on the
Damascus road (Acts 9: 1- 17,
etc.), however Torah for him took
on a deeper meaning in the com-
ing of Jesus. Paul’s Torah-cen-
tered theology was eclipsed with
an understanding of the Messiah
as the higher purpose of Torah.
The great vision of the Hebrew
prophets is realized when the
Gentiles come into relationships
with the one God of Israel. (Isa.
56;7, Zach. 14: 16). For him all
authority is derived from the
teachings of Torah, in it he un-
ravels the promise of the coming
Messiah, whom he has discov-
ered through his personal ex-
perience to be Jesus. The He-
brew scriptures are the founda-
tion of Paul’s teaching. Like
other Pharisees and religious
Jews, Paul would deal with is-
sues of ritual practice in each
situation according to his ac-
cording to his understanding of
Torah. Paul views history as
moving toward the goal of
God’s final redemptive plan,
which will cuhninate in the sec-
ond coming and final judge-
ment. Because of Paul’s realiza-
tion of what God’s plan really
means he is able to set out and go
among the Gentiles to spread the
good news. It is his insistence that
all are welcomed which will rescue
the early church from its stagna-
tion in Jerusalem. We have no fur-
ther information about the church
in Jerusalem with its ties to the
Temple, and must therefore assume
that towards the end of first cen-
tury AD it only played a minor role
within the Christian community. A
prayer: “O dear God be with me,
and help me strive to come close -
to be folly committed to You.”
