Tenaha will get Dollar General Store
Grand Opening set for December 1,2006
By Clark Partin
The Tenaha Businessmen’s
Club met last Thursday at the
Whistle Stop in Tenaha.
Randy Whatley called the
meeting to order and Brother
Odom gave the opening prayer.

Timpson City Council
okays hydrant repairs
By Florence Reeh
With four councilmen
present and no Citizen’s Input,
the regular meeting of the
Council was relatively short
timewise. Following the call to
order by Mayor McDonald
and invocation by Councilman
Roberts, old business such as
minutes of the last meeting ,
the financial statement for the
month of June and Accounts
Payable for the month, were all
approved in order.
New business included re-
viewing the HydraTech Ser-
vice estimate to fix fire
hydrants.Estimate was ap-
proved. It was decided there
was no need to paint the hy-
drants every year, just repair
those that needed it.
Repair of the Community
building was tabled for more
discussion. Also, the City
Property Review and action re-
garding the proposal by Reggie
Caraway to purchase a lot
from the city was tabled for
more information until the next
meeting. It was decided to wait
until a full council was present
to take action on this item.
It was mentioned that the
City Park needs mowing again
and the rest rooms need re-
pairs. There appears to be a
problem keeping them clean
and repaired due to vandalism.
City Secretary Teresa
Bozeman gave the Municipal
Court update. Marshal Jeff
Clopp wrote 21 citations and
Officer Barton wrote 81 for a
total of $ 11,209.65 in fines.
Tommy Sparks said the
waste water plant looks good.
He was commended for recent
work he has done.
port as Mayor Bowers was
absent from the meeting.
Doyce said that she had re-
ceived nothing but praises
about the July 4th celebration.
She read a letter from Doris
Cockrell stating how her fam-
ily enjoyed all the festivities.
She said that the Calvary Boys
and the Trio should plan on
being in Tenaha at every July
4th celebration.
Mark Hixson expressed his
thanks to all the sponsors,
school, media, and everyone
that helped with the event. He
said they hoped to have a big-
ger and better celebration next
year and also a big thank you
to all of the people from Shelby
and Panola Counties for com-
ing to Tenaha to celebrate the
4th of July.
Mitch reported that the fire
department had to go to a grass
fire last week. As of Tuesday,
Shelby County is under a
“BURN BAN”. It is extremely
hot and dry.
It was good to see Judge
Anstead and Eb Figley at the
meeting. Randy announced
that he had received a tele-
phone call saying that the Dol-
lar General Store was on go
and that the scheduled grand
opening was set for December
1, 2006. Tenahians are look-
ing forward to having a new
business in Tenaha. Remem-
ber, Shelby County is under a
BURN BAN.

Timpson Baseball teams sees win over Garrison

“And there are also many other things which
Jesus did, the which, if they should be written
every one, I suppose that even the world itsel
could no contain the books that should be
written.” John 21: 25
Encounter with an 18-wheeler—Bill Taylor of Timpson was
the driver of this automobile that was hit by a truck on
Hwy. 59 at 84 this week. He is recuperating from a stroke in
ICU at the present time. pjl0t0 j,y Florence Reeh
“Coach, when are we ever
going to beat Garrison?” a little
Timpson Bear asked at the end
of an early season loss to the
bulldogs. They had beaten us
twice the year before.
“In two weeks, son. In two
weeks we play them again and
that’s when we’ll beat them....”
“There were two good teams
on the field tonight and we have
to beat this team right here if
we want to go anywhere,”
Coach Calvin Smith, Jr. told
his farm team Bears.
Well two weeks came and in
the meanwhile we had also fell
to the Douglas Indians (another
perennial powerhouse). Garri-
son came to Timpson and beat
us like a drum. We couldn’t hit
the ball out of infield and could
not get an out. Now with three
losses, the season was over.
Then it was time to go to
Douglas for the final game. I
told my son to just play ball like
1 knew they could and beat a
good team and they would be
champions in my book. They
played good baseball that night
and beat Douglas soundly. Af-
ter the game, there was a meet-
ing on the mound, so I went to
see what it was all about.
We were surprised to find
out that Douglas had a forfeit
to Woden leaving us with iden-
tical records of 5 and 3. Then
Douglas forfeited to us send-
ing us into the playoffs. The
playoffs were between the top
2 older teams and the top 2
younger teams.
We played Douglas’
younger team in the first game
and played well, advancing to
the championship game against
the Garrison Bulldogs. On Fri-
day July 7, 2006 at 8 p.m. we
played the final game. Timpson
was the home team, so Garri-
son batted first and scored 5
runs.
However, Timpson brought
their bats that night and were
able to score 7. In the 2nd in-
ning, the questionable officiat-
ing started and each team
scored 2 runs bringing the score
to 9-7, Timpson.
Then Coach Smith was ex-
iled from the ball game and
Rodney Bass had to take over
the pitching duties.
The talk in the dugout was
2nd place wasn’t an option,
that we would beat the bull-
dogs that night, and by watch-
ing the body language, I be-
lieved it was possible. Each
team pushed three runs across
the 3rd inning to make it 12-
10, Timpson, going into the
fourth and final inning. In the
top due to another questionable
call, the Bulldogs scored twice
to tie the game. We had the
bottom of the 4th inning to win.
“Hot Rod” Bass led off the
inning with a single. When
Hunter Smith came to the plate
and smoked one down the right
field line falling just fair and
rolling into the corner, “Hot
Rod” was sure to score with
his speed. He got the green
light from the third base coach
and beat the throw by a mile
to seal the victory. We had done
it, we had beat the mighty Bull-
dogs to become champions of
the Piney Woods Baseball As-
sociation answering the seem-
ingly never-ending question,
“Coach, when are we ever go-
ing to beat Garrison?”...
