WHAT SAITH THE SCRIPTURES ?
San Augustine Church of Christ
Stephen Wiggins
This is the third and fi-
nal article in which we will
review the New World
Translation of
the Holy Scrip-
tures published
by the
Jehovah’s Wit-
nesses. This
translation reflects theo-
logical bias in their denial
of the deity of both Jesus
and the Holy Spirit. Con-
sider also that this version
echoes their denial of hell
as a place of eternal pun-
ishment. According to this
religious group hell is not
eternal nor does it consist
of a place where anyone
suffers for living a life of
disobedience to God.
Read what Jesus says in
Matthew 25:46. A reliable
translation has the Lord
teaching, “And these shall
go away into eternal pun-
ishment.” Here the Master
is talking about those who
have not been found faith-
ful on the Day of Judgment.
In verse 41 Jesus stated that
these shall be banished into
the “eternal fire.” In verse
46 he says they shall enter
into “eternal punishment.”
This is the place that Jesus
calls “hell, the unquench-
able fire” (Mark 9:43).
Hell is eternal in nature and
consists of“punishment” or
what one apostle calls
“punishment with everlast-
ing destruction from the
presence of the Lord” (2
Thess. 1:9).
The Jehovah’s Wit-
nesses that market the New
World Translation do not
believe hell is a place of
eternal punishment. They
suppose that hell is nothing
more than the grave. The
cemetery is a far as the
wicked go according to this
theory. The wicked are not
resurrected nor do they re-
ceive an eternal destiny
which involves any con-
scious punishment. Rather
the wicked are annihilated
and simply cease to exist.
This is why in Matthew
25:46 the NWT reads,
“And these will depart into
everlasting cutting-off.”
Notice they have the phrase
“cutting off’ instead of
“eternal punishment.”
There is a big difference in
suffering eternally and be-
ing cut off into non-exist-
ence. The difference is a
matter between that which
is true and false. Be aware
of the errors promoted by
this translation.

Sunday was Third Sunday
of Advent. The kids lit the
third candle of Advent and
each Sunday explains what
one of the candles stands
for. Each Sunday the kids
are also each adding an or-
nament to the Christmas
tree. The sanctuary is beau-
tiful with the tree and all the
poinsettias and decorations.
The Epistle Lesson from
today cam from 1
Thessalonians 5: 6-24. Paul
reminds us all that the most
We have been discuss-
ing “fear of the Lord.” Let
us close the subject by
looking at some examples
of Godly fear.
A. Noah Gen. 6: 13-22
“And God said unto Noah,
The end of all flesh is come
before me; for the earth is
filled with violence;
through them; and, behold,
I will destroy them with the
earth. Make thee an ark of
gopher wood; rooms shalt
thou make in the ark, and
shalt pitch it within and
without with pitch. And
this si the fashion which
thou shalt make it of: The
length of the ark shall be
three hundred cubits, the
breadth of it fifty cubits,
and the height of it thirty
cubits. A window shalt
thou make to the ark, and
holy way to worship God is
to be in loving covenant
community with each other.
Paul gives ageless advice
on how to treat others even
when others do not treat us
as we wish to be treated.
Paul tells us to rejoice al-
ways, pray without ceasing,
have an attitude of grati-
tude, hold fast to that which
is good, and never quench
the Spirit of God.
The Church Council met
after church and discussed
some of the repairs and
renovations that the trustees
in a cubit shalt thou finish
it above; and the door of the
ark shalt thou set in the side
thereof; with lower, second,
and third stories shalt thou
make it. And, behold, I,
even I, do bring a flood of
water upon the earth, to de-
stroy all flesh, wherein is
the breath of life, from un-
der heaven; and every thing
that is in the earth shall die.
But with thee will I estab-
lish my covenant; and thou
shalt come into the ark,
thou, and thy sons, and thy
wife, and thy sons’ wives
with thee. And of every liv-
ing thing of all flesh, two
of every sort shalt thou
bring into the ark, to keep
them alive with thee; they
shall be male and female.
Of the fowls after their
kind, and the cattle after
are looking at recommend-
ing. The sanctuary needs to
have new sheetrock and
painted. The trustees are
also looking at new carpet-
ing and vinyl tile. The total
cost is estimated to be
around $32,000. The Sec-
ond Mile Club of the East
District of the Methodist
Church has contributed
$9,000 toward the project.
Also, the finance commit-
tee recommended that mon-
ies be given to various
groups and charities. The
council approved and this
their kind, of every creep-
ing thing of the earth after
his kind, two of every sort
shall come unto thee, to
keep them alive. And take
thou unto thee of all food
that is eaten, and thou shalt
gather it to thee; and it shall
be food for thee, and for
them. Thus did Noah; ac-
cording to all that God
commanded him, so he did
he. “Heb. 11:6-7 “But
without faith it is impos-
sible to please him: for he
that cometh to God must
believe that he is, and that
he is a rewarder of the that
diligently seek him By faith
Noah, being warned of God
of things not seen as yet,
moved with fear, prepared
an ark to the saving of his
house; by the which he con-
demned the world, and be-
means LUMCJ gave 17%
of its giving toward opera-
tion of the district and con-
ference and their charitable
works, our own local chari-
ties, and scholarships.
The Youth Group also
met after church to work on
its program for next Sunday
evening. The program is
called The Twelve Days of
Christmas. Ms. Madeline
and other volunteers
worked with the young
people. Sue made lunch for
everyone. The program next
Sunday will begin at 6:00
came heir of the righteous-
ness which is by faith.”
B. We are to serve or
worship God with Godly
fear! Heb.12:28-29
“Wherefore we receiving a
kingdom which can not be
moved, let us have grace,
whereby we may serve God
acceptably with reverence
and godly fear: Lor our God
is a consuming fire.”
C. Prov. 31:30 “Lavoris
deceitful, and beauty is
vain: but a woman that
feareth the Lord, she shall
be praised.” The answer:
Eccl. 12:13-14 “Let us hear
the conclusion of the whole
matter: Pear God and keep
his commandments: for this
is the whole duty of man.
Lor God shall bring every
work into judgment, with
every secret thing, whether
it be good, or whether it be
evil.”

As the Sunset Limited was speeding to its destina-
tion, a baby was born.
“What will you call him?” asked
a reporter.
“Choo Choo,” answered the
mother.
Another baby was born in unusual
^^^^^^Bcircumstances, not in a stylish home,
but a stable.
He chose His own mother, and He didn’t have a
father. He was bom without sin.
We were bom to live, but He was born to die for
our sins.
When He was born, an angel said, “Thou shalt
call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people
from their sins.”
Why not let Him save you now?
