WHAT SAITH THE SCRIPTURES ?
Stephen Wiggins San Augustine Church of Christ
In Ephesians 1:22-23 the
Bible teaches Jesus is the
“head” of the “church, which is
h i s
body ” In
the same
epistle at
4:4 the
apostle
says there
is but
“one
body” So
the church
spiritual
body of Christ and there is but
one body. This teaches there is
but one church. Just as there is
but one head there is but one
body. And since the church is
the body of Christ there is but
one church of Christ.
It is true that sometimes the
word “church” is used in a plu-
ral sense when congregations
are geographically considered.
For example, in Romans 16:16
Paul says, “the churches of
Christ salute you.” Thus, in a
congregational sense there are
many churches of Christ that
compose the one universal body
or church of Christ. This is why
I often speak of the oneness of
the Lord’s church. There is but
one true, New Testament church.
There is not two, three, or three
hundred. From a biblical view-
point one is not at liberty to “join
the church of your choice” be-
cause there is but one. There is
not a plurality of churches to
choose from. In the first cen-
tury people obeyed the gospel
under the preaching of the
apostles and thus were “bap-
tized into the one body” (1 Cor.
12:13). This is the way it is to-
day among those who believe
and practice the teachings of the
New Testament.
Have you ever asked yourself
which church the apostle Paul
was a member of? What about
the apostle Peter? How about
Silas, Barnabas, Timothy, or
Mark? Has it ever occurred to
you that they were not members
of different denominations all
wearing different names, teach-
ing different doctrines, and sub-
scribing to different terms of en-
trance into various denomina-
tional churches? This was not
the case because they were all
members of the one New Testa-
ment church that we read of on
the pages of the Bible. At that
particular time different denomi-
national groups did not exist.
The first Protestant denomina-
tions did not come into existence
until some fifteen hundred years
after the New Testament was
completed. The plea of the
church of Christ today is for
people to forsake the unautho-
rized practices of denomination-
alism and to be content with be-
ing merely members of the
Lord’s church. You don’t have
to wear a denominational name
or to be a member of any de-
nominational church that you
can’t read of in the Bible. It is
possible to be simply a Chris-
tian.

Teachings from the Bible
TiivipsoN CIiurcIi oF ChmsT Xel. 569-9840
We are told to pray without
ceasing: 1 Thess 5: 17 “Pray
without ceasing”
Prayer is our only way to
contact God. So how should we
Pray? Jesus gave us a guideline
howto pray: Matt. 6:5-15 “And
when thou prayest, thou shalt not
be as athe hypocrites are: for
they love to pray standing in the
synagogues and in the corners
of the streets, that they be seen
of men. Verily I say unto you,
They have their reward. But
thou, when thou, when thou
prayest, enter into thy closet, and
when thou hath shut thy door,
pray to thy Father which is in
secret; and thy Father which
seeth in secret shall reward thee
openly. But when ye pray, use
not vain repetition, as the hea-
then do; for they think that shall
be heard for their much speak-
ing. Be not ye therefore like unto
them: for your Father knoweth
what things ye have need of,
before ye ask him. After this
manner therefore pray ye: Our
Father which art in heaven, Hal-
lowed be thy name. Thy king-
dom come. Thy will be done in
earth, as it is in heaven. Give us
this day our daily bread. And
forgive us our debts, as we for-
give our debtors. And lead us not
into temptation, but deliver us
from evil: For thine is the king-
dom, and the power, and the
glory, for ever amen. For if ye
forgive men their trespasses,
your heavenly Father will also
forgive you:” Now we know we
cannot pray for the kingdom to
come; because it came on the
first Passover, after Christ was
crucified. Christ was teaching
his disciples. We also should be
very sure we forgive our debt-
ors; for we are asking to be for-
given as we forgive others. We
must pray believing: Mark 11
:24-26 “Therefore I say unto
you, What things soever ye de-
sire, when ye pray, believe that
ye receive them, and ye shall
have them. And when ye stand
praying forgive, if ye have aught
against any: that your Father
also which is in heaven may for-
give you your trespasses. But if
ye do not forgive, neither will
your Father which is in heaven
forgive your trespasses.”
We can have forgiveness of
our sins; but we must ask in
Christ name: 1 John 2:12 “My
little children (i.e. Christians),
these things write I unto you,
that ye sin not. And if any man
sin, we have an advocate with
the Father, Jesus Christ the righ-
teous: And he is the propitiation
for our sins: and not for ours
only, but also for the sins of the
whole world.” So you see prayer
is not only a command, but a
great privilege to come to God
in Christ Holy name.
Seeds From The Sower
Michael A. Guido Metter, Georgia
A lazy farmhand fell off a tractor and was rushed to the hos-
pital. After an examination the doctor said, “Here’s some bad
news. You won’t be able to work for six months.”
“Thanks,” said the man. “Now what’s the bad
news?” But work isn’t bad for us. It’s good. The
daily grind of work gives us polish!
God isn’t a lazy God but a laboring God. The
Bible opens with God working, “In the beginning
God created the heaven and the earth.”
He’s still working. Our Lord said, “My Father
is always at work and I am working.”
It’s ungodlike not to work if you can work.

Lay up for yourselves
treasures in heaven ... For
where your treasure is, there
will your heart be also ...”
(Matthew 6:19-21).
Let me begin by relaying to
you an account I read from a
minister: “Re-
cently, a mar-
ried couple
^ came in for
- ___I counseling.
*'’* The wife was
^ ' frustrated, and
ji the husband
I was so de-
^ Ah pressed that he
function. He had been laid off
from his job as a health care pro-
vider and had been unable to
find work for two years. His job
had been his life and joy. In it
he had found his identity in the
community and among his
friends. It had given him self-
worth, which was the key to his
problem.”
You see, our true identity
cannot be based on what we
do or on what we possess, but
only on our relationship with
Jesus Christ. We all need to
have an identity, which gives us
status and self-esteem. How-
ever, many people believe that
they will gain an identity
through a position in the work-
place and community or through
possessions, which others will
admire or even envy. Others
think that they will find an iden-
tity in pleasures they pursue.
These 3 false identities were
actually at the root of Satan’s
temptations to Jesus when He
was in the wilderness. First,
Satan tempted Jesus with the
identity of pleasure: “Command
that these stones be made
bread.” The second temptation
posed an identity through posi-
tion: “If thou be the Son of God,
cast thyself down.” The third
temptation presented an iden-
tity in possessions as Satan
showed Him all the kingdoms
of the earth and their glory. “All
these things will I give thee, if
thou wilt fall down and worship
me.” (See Matthew 4: l—10.)
If we look for an identity out-
side of a relationship with
Christ, we will experience dis-
illusionment and despair. A 20-
year-old student was asked a
very common question, “What
do you want to do with your
life?” The student answered,
“Get a good-paying job.” The
student was then asked, “What
else do you want to do?” The
answer was, “Be a legislator.”
There was a further question,
“What do you want to do after
that?” The response was, “Be an
assistant to the President.” You
see, this student was planning
to find identity in possessions
and position.
In contrast to this, there was
a young, 15-year-old boy in Tai-
wan who was also once asked
this same question while riding
in a car with a couple of minis-
ters. He said that he did not
know. Then one of the ministers
riding in the car with this young
boy listening to his answer said,
’’When I was 15, my one goal
was to love the Lord with all my
heart, soul and mind and
strength. God promises that we
cannot even imagine what He
will do for those who love
Him.” (See I Cor. 2: 9).
In the process of surrender-
ing our lives to the Lord Jesus
Christ, we should propose to
abandon the goals we have for
finding our identity. Instead, let
us focus on the Lord Jesus, and
then you will experience a mar-
velous freedom. It doesn’t mat-
ter what happens to position,
possessions, or pleasures, be-
cause they are not the founda-
tion of life. My prayers are that
each of us will experience the
joy and freedom the joy and free-
dom that comes by finding iden-
tity in Christ alone.
