HUB Task Force continues to collaborate
ideas for funding, purpose and location
Collaboration of ideas
continued at last Thursday’s
Palacios Community Task
Force Meeting along with a
“homework” assignment” for
each task member to decide
upon five essential services the
HUB will initially provide the
community of Palacios.
Ultimately the Task Force’
main focus is identifying
an ideal physical home, and
eventually this center will
provide information and
resources for all Palacios
citizens.
Talk of renting a
temporary physical HUB is
underway, pending attorney
recommendations, along
with review of ideal grant
possibilities for “bricks and
mortar” to become a reality.
Additional topics discussed:
how the HUB will financially
maintain itself with grants and
donations, staffing the physical
interim HUB space, and an
overview of entities already
onboard to provide services
as early as next month.
Task Force members will
attend a meeting hosted by
The Trull Foundation and
Fenora Dorefler, from the
Texas Health Institute, to learn
aboutTexas Benefits Bank and
listen to input from community
leaders about the best location
for the Benefits Bank.
Gratitude was unanimously
shared by the Task Force to
the Advisory Board for their
ideas and recommendations
that were provided at the
orientation meeting earlier
this month.
Future expertise will be
provided by the following
Advisory Board Members:
Isidro Castanon, Joanne
Estopinal, James Gibson,
Barney Gulley, Father Bryan
Heyer, Rev. David King, David
Kocurek, Troy Fewis, Mark
Rusk, Ed Schultz, Mary Ann
Shimek, Scott Tran, Bruce
Webb, Mary West, and Ruth
Young.
The next Task Force
scheduled meeting is May
23rd.

Brune in race for
PISD Board Pos. 3
I am Donna L. Brune
and I am a candidate for
Position 3 on the Palacios
ISD Board of Trustees. I
have been married to my
husband, Keith Brune
for over 23 years and we
have two sons. Our oldest
son is currently in college
and our younger son is a
sophomore at the Palacios
High School. I am the
manager at Prosperity B ank
in Palacios where I have
served our community for
over 18 years.
I am an active member
of our community. I have
served as a member of
both the PISD Junior High
& High School Campus
ImprovementTeams,PalaciosYouthFootball League,Rainbow
Land Day Care Board of Directors, Harmonie Club, Rotary Club,
Chamber of Commerce, and the Palacios Athletic Booster Club.
If elected to serve, one of my goals is to encourage more
parental and community involvement for the children in our
community. I truly believe in the old saying, “It takes a village
to raise a child”. I would like to facilitate meetings between
community members, church leaders, and the school board to
discuss ways to get more parents involved in their child’s life.
I am hoping that we can develop a plan, with the help of our
community leaders, to reach out to parents, grandparents, aunts
and uncles, and neighbors, and help them to understand how
very important it is that we play an active role in our children’s
lives. I want everyone to understand how important it is for a
child to have someone attend their open house at school, sit in
the stands during an event, and attend parent conferences so the
child knows that someone is there supporting them. We need
to all work on being a positive influence in our children’s lives.
We have some amazing teachers in our school district. I
know that with the changes in the curriculum such as C-Scope,
STAAR, and EOC testing, every day in the classroom can
be a challenge. Our teachers go to work each and every day
with one goal in mind.. .providing the best education possible
for our students. I stand behind our teachers, and have the
utmost respect for them. Teaching is a job that rarely gets the
appreciation it deserves.
With my involvement in our community and 18 years of
financial experience, I feel that I have many talents to bring to
the board table. I have the ability to look at issues from different
angles and make a decision based upon the facts and the interest
of what is best for the whole. I want everyone to know that I
think for myself and always do what I feel in my heart is the
right thing to do. I have always lived by the adage “Stand up
for what is right, even if it means you are standing alone.”
I would greatly appreciate your vote and the opportunity to
serve our community on the Palacios School Board.
Subscribing to the Palacios Beacon
is scientifically proven to raise your IQ.
