Chapman nominated for slot of chief
deputy majority whip in the House
By MARY GRANT DAVIS
U.S. Rep. Jim Chapman has been
named to a list of people who are
being considered for the seat of
Democratic deputy whip in the House
of Representatives.
If he were to receive the designa-
tion, the Sulphur Springs Democrat
would be four steps from the speak-
er’s chair.
He has been selected by a Demo-
cratic conservative group as one of its
choices for the office.
The position became available after
Como-Pickton
HS principal
resigns post
Members of the Como-Pickton
Independent SchoofDistrict board of
trustees accepted the resignation of
Gary McCain, high, school principal,
during the board’s regular meeting
Thursday night.
According to Richard Teer, Como-
Pickton superintendent, a committee
consisting of the superintendent, one
school board member and three high
school teachers will be formed to
search for a new principal.
“We hope to have someone named
by the first of August,” Teer noted.
McCain will take over the reins of
Cooper Elementary School, Teer said.
In other business, trustees tabled
discussion on the construction of a
Pine Forest community center until
further information could be
obtained.
Board members also voted to allow
the cheerleaders to use a school bus
for transportation to cheerleading
camp at East Texas State University
A bid for property/casualty, auto
and professional liability insurance
was awarded to Offenhauser.

absentee voting clerks for the Aug.
10 special election.

board accepted the resignation of
Missy Caddell, teacher’s aide.
Board members certified the delin-
quent tax roll, adopted policy updates
from the Texas Association of School
Boards and approved payment of
bills.
the resignation of Rep. William Gray
who served as majority whip.
“This would be a tremendous hon-
or. It’s not anything you campaign
for. My political philosophy is more
conservative than his (Speaker Tom
Foley), or other members of the
Democratic leadership team, which is
one of the reasons I ended up on a list
of the people who want a more con-
servative leadership,” Chapman told
The News-Telegram Tuesday.
The only other Texan suggested for
the seat is Charles Stenholm of Stam-
ford.
