Gladewater police
arrest local fugitive
Vititow wanted for kidnapping
By BRUCE ALSOBROOk
A Sulphur Springs man s flight from the criminal justice sy stem ended
over the weekend when he was arrested by Gladewater police.
Jeffrey Wade Vititow eluded capture by law enforcement authorities for
almost three months before his arrest on a possession of a controlled sub-
stance charge Saturday in Gregg County .
Deputies from Hopkins County Sheriff's Department and a Sulphur
Springs police lieutenant drove to Gladewater Monday morning to pick up
Vititow.
Authorities have been searching for the 31-year-old Vititow since he was
indicted on a felony kidnapping charge by a Hopkins County grand jury
in June.
Authorities throughout East Texas had been asked to be on the lookout
for the fugitive. In July. Camp County deputies received a tip that Vititow
was holed up in a home south of Pittsburg.
When officials moved in for the arrest, however, the suspect ran out a
back door and into a wooded area behind the home.
Later that month, police released a photograph of Vititow to the new s
media, and the local Crimestoppers organization offered a flat SI.000
reward for information leading to Vititow s capture
Vititow is accused of abducting his w ife in May and forcing her to drive
to Commerce at gunpoint.
Police said when the pair arrived in Commerce, however, the woman
persuaded Vititow to stop at her place of work and allow her to go inside
momentarily. Once in the building. Commerce police were contacted.
They arrived at the scene and arrested Vititow on a weapons charge.
Sulphur Springs police obtained a warrant for aggravated kidnapping
that day and arrested Vititow on the charge. He later posted a SI00.000
bond and was released.
District Attorney Frank Long, in district court Monday morning for jury
selection, said Vititow's case would not be heard in court this month. His
trial, should there be a need for one, likely won't be held until December.
If convicted of the aggravated kidnapping charge, he faces up to life in
prison and a SI0.000 fine.
A charge of failure to appear in court has yet to be filed aaainsi Vi
