Local coalition members
to join program protesters
LIVINGSTON - The Christian
Coalition of Polk County will be
joining many others in picketing
KTRK, Channel 13-TV, Monday to
protest the station’s plan to show a
new program described by many as
being R-rated softcore pornog-
raphy. The Houston picket is one of
several planned across the nation to
protest the showing of this program
series.
ABC plans to begin showing the
program, NYPD Blue, in Septem-
ber. NYPD Blue is produced by
Steven Bochco. "Steven Bochco
and ABC want to further push the
limits of sex, violence and
prqfanity on network TV with
NYPD Blue. We are asking ABC
and their local affiliates not to show
softcore pornography and to show
respect for our families," said
Donald E. Wildmon, president of
American Family Association,
which is leading the effort oppos-
ing NYPD Blue.
USA Today said this about
Bochco’s NYPD Blue: "A clip
shown at the New York presenta-
tion featured a cop, Dennis Franz,
in bed with a prostitute. Another
scene had a colleague undressing a
woman in a steamy sex scene. All
this, and blood and guns and racy
language, too, from Bochco...."
Hollywood agents were told that
nudity would be required of the
actresses who’ll portray the show’s
two female leads. USA Today said
the pilot had a sex scene that shows
Number is limited
a woman’s breasts and includes
raw, gutter language.
"I’m surprised they went as far
as they did. I don’t think they
needed to do that to have a success-
ful program," said Clyde Helton of
KSPR in Springfield, Mo. He said
the show was "more graphic" than
he would have liked. "I don’t think
it will play well in Springfield."
Perry Chester of WQAD in
Moline, 111., called the sex scene "a
little strong."
Bochco told USA Today. "TV
has always been 30 years behind
the times. It’s no secret I’ve been
trying to drag these folks kicking
and screaming into the 1990s. And
I must say, ABC...has been ter-
rific." He told ABC’s Good Morn-
ing America: "I would hope...lhat
networks will begin to allow those
of us who are making serious
dramas to bring, to produce more
explicit material for network televi-
sion... language, sex, the whole
panoply."
The peaceful picket will take
place this Monday from noon until
2:30 p.m. According to Rita Blood-
worth, coordinator, a caravan will
leave the Christian Coalition office
at 10 a.m. They are also circulating
a petition and conducting a letter-
writing campaign to the station
manager. Local members are urg-
ing people to contact: Channel 13,
Jim Masucci, P.O. Box 13, Hous-
ton, Texas 77001, (713) 666-0713.
Deer permits available
LUFKIN - The U.S. Forest
Service is offering a limited num-
ber of permits to hunt antlerless
deer during the general season Nov.
6 to Jan. 2,1994.

a permit should send a postcard

and the applicant’s 1993-94 hunt-
ing license number. Only one hun-

and multiple applications in the
same name are not allowed. Only
postcards will be accepted.
The antlerless deer hunt will be

Forest Hunters familiar with the
area are encouraged to specify the
zone or area they prefer.
Deadline for submitting applica-
tions for the permits is OcL 1. The
card should be sent to U.S. Forest
Service, Attention: Larry Bonner,
701 N. First St., Lufkin, Texas,
75904.

October to select a limited number
of permits. Only those chosen will
be notified.
The antlcrlcss deer hunt is coor-
dinated by the National Forests in
Texas, a federal agency, and the

ment, a state agency, in an effort to
balance the deer population with
the available food and natural cover
