The Truth of
The Matter
By J. D. Sumner
I have been asked to write an ar-
ticle for the Stamps Quartet News.
This is an honor for me as I was
brought up in the singing conventions.
We owe so much
to so many for the
work that has been
done in gospel mu-
sic, and one of the
leaders has always
been Mr. Frank
Stamps.
There have been
m any rumors
about the Black-
___________wood Brothers
buying into the Stamps Quartet Mu-
sic Company. Some of the rumors are
true and some are not. I will try and
tell you the straight of it.
We have joined the Stamps Quartet
Music Company and it is my privilege
to work with Mr. Stamps on the part
of the Blackwood Brothers. We are
not going out of business in any de-
partment. Mr. Stamps and his lovely
wife are not leaving the Company. . .
now or ever! Mr. Stamps is still Pres-
ident of the Company, and will re-
main so. We are not going out of the
convention book business. Here is
what will happen in the convention
field:
With the help of you, our friends,
we feel that we have a very fine staff
of writers (the best) and we are
proud of them. This will be good news
to our people. Mr. Albert E. Brumley
will again be writing for the Stamps
Quartet convention department. There
has never been a man to write so
many great songs as Albert E. Brum-
ley, and to have his songs in a book
is to have a good book. Rev. Vep
Ellis will be writing again for the
Company. This man has also turned
out some of the greatest songs of our
time. Joe Roper has been added to the
staff of writers and he also turns out
some of the best. Wally Varner, pia-
nist for the Blackwood Brothers, will
add to this fine list of popular writ-
ers. Look for songs by the Big Chief,
bass singer for the Statesmen Quar-
tet; David Reece with the Rangers
Trio will certainly have some hits;
and one of the great old-timers, Mr. J.
E. Roane, will again write some of
his great songs. Our most capable
editor, Mr. John T. Cook, will turn
out the greatest convention books of
our time with these fine men added
to the staff of writers that have al-
ready been making Stamps Quartet
convention books a MUST in any con-
vention.
Besides the big school in Dallas
each June (and the one this year was
August, 1962 STAMPS QUARTET NEWS Page (3)
one of the best ever) we are plan-
ning to have a three-week school in
Greenville, South Carolina; a three-
week school in Memphis, Tennessee
and a three-week school in Fort
Smith, Arkansas.
The Stamps Quartet Music Com-
pany will try to give young people the
training opportunities never before
offered. If our young people are not
taught what we were taught in gos-
pel music, there will be no gospel
music tomorrow.
Look for big things to happen in
the field of gospel music. There is no
room for fighting. We sincerely be-
lieve that any book with a gospel
song in it is worth buying. Gospel
songs are inspired by GOD, whether
that song is in our book or not. Let’s
all work together for one reason—
and that for gospel music to grow.
We hope that every music company
that publishes gospel music will re-
member that only by working togeth-
er can we all contribute to its growth.
The Blackwood Brothers have join-
ed Mr. Stamps for one reason and
that reason is for the betterment of
gospel music. If you feel this way,
then gospel music will continue to
grow and we will all be successful.
Look for the NEW STAMPS
QUARTET, with Big Jim Waits, Joe
Roper and three other fine Christian
men, and they will continue to “Give
The World A Smile.” We will also
have a Stamps Office Quartet, with
Jimmy Grisham, Billy Porter and
others. LET’S GO WITH GOSPEL
MUSIC!
If at any time we can help, we are
as close as your phone or pen.
God bless each and everyone is my
prayer.
Decatur County
Tennessee
By J. A. McMurry
The Decatur County Singers met
with the Cub Creek Hall Church for
their first Sunday afternoon singing
on August 5th. The attendance was
good and the singing wonderful. It
seemed that all the singers just open-
ed their mouths and let the song
waves roll. We have a large number
of young people that are good direc-
tors, and this alone should cause all
of us in Decatur County, who love
•gospel singing, to get on the move
for more and better singing. We
should give more of our time and
means to promoting gospel singing.
The life we live on this earth should
be spent in helping our young people
become good Christian ladies and gen-
tlemen. Helping promote gospel sing-
ing is one way that we can do this.
Our young people of today will be
our leaders of tomorrow. Sometimes
when I read the good letters in the
Stamps Quartet News from many dif-
ferent states it makes me feel that
us folks over here in West Tennessee
are not on the move for gospel sing-
ing as we should be. Let us try to do
more in the future than we have in
the past. And may we do something
that will cause our rural ministers
to get on the move for gospel sing-
ing. I remembber many years ago I
attended a church service where the
minister had to direct the singing. It
made me wonder why so many of our
ministers do not try to promote better
gospel singing in the churches. We
will see better choirs and more live
wire churches when they realize that
gospel singing is a part of the Lord’s
service.
The Decatur County Singers will
meet with New Hope Church on Sun-
day afternoon, August 12th to help
make the day a good beginning for
their revival, which begins that morn-
ing at 11:00. On Sunday afternoon,
August 19th the Decatur County Sing-
ers will meet with Davis School for
their third Sunday afternoon singing.
We were glad to have Mrs. Norris
and sons with us at Cub Creek Hall
Church on August 5th. We always
welcome our Benton and Henderson
county friends. Many of them attend
our ten-night singing schools and nor-
mals.
Best wishes to all until next month.

San Antonio, Texas
By R. M. (Rip) Collins
If hot weather has anything to do
with helping to have good singing,
then we should have the best. The
temperature has been 100 or above
here for the past fourteen censecutive
days and the weather man said we
may have more such days.
We had a good singing the fourth
Sunday at the Ravenhill Baptist. Al-
so a good singing at the Memorial
Baptist Church on the fifth Sunday.
We had some real good singing on
the first Sunday even if the tempera-
ture was 103.
We are hoping to see many of our
friends from other cities here for the
Southwest Texas Singing Convention
on October 13th and 14th. This con-
vention will be held in the Harlandale
Junior High School, 300 West Huff
in San Antonio. If you have not al-
ready made plans to go to some other
convention on that date, we would
be glad for you to visit us. Remem-
ber the date—October 13-14.
