We have attended some real good
singing conventions lately and are
glad to report that gospel singing is
picking up all over the country. We
are truly thankful
for the revived in-
terest. There seems
to be a much bet-
ter spirit in the
singings. Most of
the singers are
putting God first
and that is what it
takes to make a
real singing.
J. T. Williams
and I attended the
Upsher County Convention at Gilmer
and had a wonderful time. I discov-
ered America in Upshur County and
have called it home all my life. The
REA Building was packed and enough
people on the outside to fill it up
again. We appreciate all of our
friends in Upshur County Texas. We
saw and had a long talk with the
Owens boys. A lot of you readers
will remember the Owens Brothers
and Ellis, a great quartet of bygone
days. Would like to mention all the
good friends we saw but time and
space will not permit. We would like
to say thanks to Mr. Allen, the man
in charge of the convention.
J. W. Livingston and I attended the
Smith County Convention at Tyler
and had a good time. We heard some
real singing that day and the First
Assembly of God was packed. .Thanks
to Brother Green, the Pastor, and his
fine Choir for the nice reception. Mr.
Oglesby was in charge and he knows
how to keep a singing convention in
high gear.
Romy Grissom and I attended the
Rains County Convention at Flat, near
Point, Texas and again we enjoyed a
good singing. It was one of those
singings where everybody was con-
genial and the fellowship wonderful—
no singing politics. Our thanks to
Buck Watts, Edward Tooles, Kelsie
Ross family and others for being so
nice. Enjoyed seeing Mr. Hugh Mc-
Alister, who is 86 years young and
his voice still clear as a bell. That is
what training will do when you get
it while young.
Sometime ago I heard a quartet
say “We would like to sell song books
but just can’t sell them.” I listened to
them through the convention and it
was not hard to figure out WHY they
couldn’t sell them. If you want to sell

song books, SING THE SONGS IN
THE BOOKS and they will sell. Every
song that particular quartet used that
day was from sheet music and none
from the books they were trying to
sell.
Our first class and convention book
for 1963, HEAVEN’S ECHO, is being
printed at this time and will be
ready Januray 1st or before. I am
thinking this will be one of the best
we have ever made. Why not get your
supply early ? Advance orders are
coming in now from all over the
country. Send check or money order
with the order and save the C.O.D.
charge. Only 60 cents per copy; $6.00
per dozen; $23.00 for 50; $40.00 for
100, postpaid.
If you want to get the new book
early (about a week before the regu-
lar orders are filled) I would suggest
our Subscription Plan and here is how
it works: Send $1.50, your name and
mailing address, and you will receive
one copy of HEAVEN’S ECHO when
it is ready. We will mail you the
Stamps Quartet News once each
month for twelve issues, and another
book June 1st. You get two books and
the News, a $2.00 value for only $1.50.
Write the Stamps Quartet Music
Company, Box 4366, Dallas, Texas or
any of our other offices.
We can make 1963 the greatest
singing year that we have had but to
do this we will ALL have to work
together. We will appreciate any-
thing you do for gospel singing and
the Stamps Quartet Music Company.
If we can help) let us know and it will
be coming up.
Report From
James Blackwood
And Blackwood
Brothers
I have just seen the songs that
will be in the new January conven-
tion book HEAVEN’S ECHO, and I’m
so excited I can hardly wait for the
book to be printed. There are great
new songs by Vep Ellis, Curtis Doss,
B. I. Cline, Wally Varner, C. C. Staf-
ford, Joe Roper, L. D. Huffstutler,
David Reece, Hale Reeves, J. D. Sum-
ner, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stamps, Al-
bert E. Brumley and many others.
I would suggest that you get your
.advance order in so that you will be
among the first to get your shipment
of HEAVEN’S ECHO, the book that
everybody will be talking about in
1963.
There is a resurgence of spirituality
in our gospel concerts like I have
never seen before. I am told that
this is true in singing conventions
also. It is my belief that if we will
all talk more about what GOD has
done and can do, and less about what
WE have done that we will see God
do things in our gospel singings that
we never dreamed of. Recently I have
been seeking God as I never have be-
fore in my life and although I have
been a Christian for many years, I
have found a place in Christ, near to
the heart of God, that I had never
known before. God is moving in the
lives of other quartet singers. I chal-
lenge all gospel singers to make a
new and complete dedication of your
lives to God and let our main concern
be how big a hit we can make for
God rather than for ourselves. I
promise you that if we will all do
this we will see the greatest revival
this country has ever had. I’m not
writing this just to fill up space—I
mean business with God, and I chal-
lenge you to join me in a great united
effort for God in these days of crisis.
The 1962 National Quartet Conven-
tion was the greatest ever—the larg-
est attendance, the most quartets and
the best spirit. The morning service on
Sunday was one of the best services
I’ve ever been in. Nearly a hundred
people came forward for salvation
and dedication at the conclusion of
Hovie’s sermon. About 4,000 people
attended the morning service. The
National Quartet Convention will
again convene in Memphis next year
on October 18, 19, and 20.
God bless you all and I’ll see you
next month.

Ohio News
By Charles C. Dickey
The first Sunday in October found
us at the Old-Time Gospel Mission on
South Arlington Street in Akron
with our good friend Mr. Clyde Bal-
lew. HAPPY DAY was used for the
class singing. The Glorybound Trio
and the Faith Quartet did some good
singing and everybody enjoyed them.
Saturday night, October 20th found
us back at Chippawa Lake Baptist
Church with Mr. Dave Calvert, Beth-
any Quartet, Gospel Echoes and other
good singers. The next day found us
at the Naomi Baptist Church in Cleve-
land and this was one of the best.
Space will not permit naming all the
singers.
The fourth Saturday night found
us at the Bethany Baptist Church in
Lay Fayette, Ohio and this too was a
good one. Our good friend Rev.
Skaggs is pastor there.
I enjoy reading every article in
the News. If I know what a Christian
attitude is, Mr. J. D. Sumner has it.
I also enjoy what Joe Roper has to
say. I heard him play down in Ala-
bama when he could barely reach the
pedal on the piano. I believe the first
time I ever heard him play, it was the
good old song “He Bore It All.
Until next time, may the Lord bless
each of you.
