THE BUS LINE
By DAN BUS
Drivers passing tho Texas Fire Building last night could note
a bee-hive of activity through the big plate glass windows.
Members of the Lions Club who had volunteered for the empty
Stocking project were there busily packing boxes to be distributed
Monday
That’s Christmas spirit in the true sense of the word These
men could have been home watching TV or could have
spent the lime getting ready for their own Christmas observance
But we are sure their Christmas will be much happier because
they have helped make Christmas happier for someone else

Winners in the Jaycees Christmas lighting contest are to be
announced in tomorrow’s paper and we are looking forward to
the announcement
Judges will be m Kmus from out-of-town tonight to select the
winners in the contest
A number of local homes arc entered in the contest—and all
of these and other Ennis families have done a nice job brighten-
ing the city up for the holiday season.
A number of downtown stores have very nice Christinas decora
lions too.

much Christmas cheer and New
Year’s celebrating.
The Annual Safety Council
warned today that holiday traffu
deaths from Friday evening until
Tuesday night will kill some 660
persons
Much of this will be avoided
if motorists who warm up for
the drive home take the advice
of Dr i/oon Greenberg of Yale
University's Center of Alcohol
studies.
He suggests motorists top off
their holiday cheer with coffee.
He said his experiments show
that two cups of coffee make a
safer driver out of a man or wo-
man who is high on two or three
drinks
Greenberg is the director of
the Yale University laboratory
of applied bio dynamic s He i^
studying the degrees by which
alcohol m<-s **s up the bndv func
tions which make fer safe-driv-
ing
One of these body functions is
called visual fusion This is the
brain activity which takes the
separate images picked up by the
two eves and fuses them into
to one and one half seconds A
car going 50 miles an hour can
move 100 feet in that time A
really drunk person never will
get the two images together and
will see double Even coffee
won’t help that person
Rut in the three-drink driver,
two cups of coffee will cut tIn-
fusion time down to -even eight
or nine-hundreths of a second
or almost normal
Coffee also help- side vision
narrowed by the effect' of alco-
hol. As Greenberg explained it
even after one drink the breadth
of vision closes in A person
doesn't have to be entirely drunk
to have tunnel vision ’’
Greenberg said coffee also
spireds up reaction times which
have been slowed by alcohol
However, he warned that Un-
person who is three-sheet s-t i >-t he-
-nd w ill r - I no tie'll i-> i,f11"■
He also said that coffee does not
justify the drunk in trying to
drive
His definition (if drunkenness
is scientific but easy to apply
Any person w ho shows gross dis
turbaneo.-, of bchavioi is drunk
