Museum Musings
By Missy Jones
This past week has been a
very busy one at the Museum.
First of all, Fredda and a
group are scanning pictures in
the Museum. They have started
in the Comanche room, with so
many pictures there, they will
clean the glass in the frames,
scan the pictures to preserve
those items for history, and
labeling and re-positioning the
pictures. Come in and look at
how well the room will look
when they are finished, and the
work they are doing will ensure
that pictures and items are pre-
served for posterity.
Last week, I had a phone
call from Gene Wilson. Gene is
a long time friend, and his
sweet wife, Polly Cox Wilson,
is a friend of mine and my sis-
ter Maxine, as we all worked
together at the Service Dmg in
the early 1950's. Gene said they
had an old Philco television,
dating back to the 1950’s, and
wondered if the Museum might
like to have it. He brought it
Thursday afternoon. It is just
great. It has a blond wood base
and the picture is mounted
above the base and is probably
an oval sized glass tube, or that
is what it looks like. We certain-
ly didn't have anything like it.
When I have more time I will
get on the old world wide web
and research it. But, we were
delighted to have it. I always
think of Gene's mother, Ozella
Wilson Wooten, who was a
great friend of our Museum and
brought us several pictures and
other items. Thanks, Gene and
Polly for your kindness.
Saturday found us work-
ing hard at the Museum.
Volunteers were on hand doing
various jobs, and we had sever-
al visitors. Among them were
Nathan, Amanda and Destiny.
They live near the Museum and
are such nice young people.
They are always so well man-
nered, and several times have
volunteered to dust and use the
Windex on our glass cases. My
dear sister Maxine, from Austin
was here, and I always love
having her at the museum. She
also picked up the Windex and
the paper towels and worked on
shining up glass cases. We real-
ly think she should move back
to Comanche and work with us
all of the time. We have lots of
fan, just come up here and join
us.
Sunday afternoon, I had a
phone call from my son Mark
Jones. He was at a convenience
store here in Comanche and
there was a lady and man there
at the same store. The lady
asked Mark what kind of places
of historical interest they could
see. Being a good civic minded
citizen, he told them about "Old
Cora" and the "Fleming Oak"
and the historical markers on
the square and gave them direc-
tions to downtown Comanche.
She mentioned that she was a
descendant of the Cunningham
family and they were here from
California. Of course, he told
them that I was on the board of
the Museum and would be
happy to open up for them, as
he knew about the Cunningham
information that our Museum
has. He called me right them,
and you know me, I am always
happy to open the Museum and
share our history with every-
one. We agreed to be at the
Museum about 1 pm. When
Maxine and I got to the muse-
um, they were waiting at the
gate. She brought me a beauti-
ful bouquet of cut flowers, and
that was before I even opened
the museum doors. She was
Kelly Cunningham Smith and
her husband was Chris and they
were here from Bloomington,
CA. She was a direct descen-
dant of Aaron Cunningham.
When we got inside the muse-
um, I took them first of all to the
Newburg room where there is a
large display of pictures and
artifacts and history from the
Cunningham family. She was
so surprised when we started
pulling out history from every-
where. I also called Ruth Adele
Waggoner who is also from the
Cunningham family and she
came right down to the
Museum. Ruth Adele is
descended from Elizabeth
Cunningham, and she made a
special trip back to her house
for family information to share
with Kelly and Chris. Ruth
Adele had another engagement,
but went out of her way to help
them. Hey, that is what we do
here at the museum. Aaron and
Elizabeth are both children of
Captain James and Suzanna
Tate Cunningham. Kelly was
surprised to see the family his-
tory displayed, particularly the
information about the 100th
family reunion for the
Cunningham's in 1989. I love
showing visitors this informa-
tion, as so many ladies maga-
zines have these little articles
highlighting a family reunion
with about 35 or 40 people in
attendance. They should come
to Comanche each year and
check out this family. Also,
there were over 600 people in
attendance at the Reunion for
the 100th anniversary in 1989.
Chris was going all over the
museum looking at our exten-
sive displays and we were look-
ing and making copies of infor-
mation for Kelly. She left her
mailing address, and I told her
that when people came in look-
ing for family information, we
are thinking as fast as we can
for their information, and many
times can't remember every-
thing and will think of some-
thing when they have left the
museum. If we have their mail-
ing address, we can always
send them more information.
And, I will do that for Kelly. I
told her about the book,
"Patchwork of Memories",
written about Comanche
County, and I can make her
some copies of family informa-
tion from that and mail it to her.
I was also able to give Kelly a
hand-out about "Frontier
Regiments," a booklet that I
have put together showing the
roster of Frontier regiments put
together in the years about
1861, to help protect the fron-
tier from Indians. One particu-
lar regiment, that was at old
Camp Colorado, was com-
manded by Capt. Thomas C.
Frost, and is mostly composed
of Comanche and Brown
County men. There are three of
the Cunningham boys listed on
the regiment. Remember, we
are always happy to share infor-
mation and to help you locate
yours. Thanks, Missy Jones.
