BVD and The Comanche
Cow Clinic
Do not worry this is not an
article about men’s undergar-
ments (BVD’s), but Bovine
Viral Diarrhea (BVD). While
BVD is known primarily for
causing chronic diarrhea and
poor reproductive performance,
it is also known to suppress the
animals’ immune system and
make the animal more suscepti-
ble to other diseases and illness-
es. BVD is commonly thought
of as the world’s most costly
livestock viral pathogen.
Persistently infected ani-
mals or BVD-PI calves occur
when the fetus is infected with
the BVD pathogen during the
first 125 days of gestation.
These calves may or may not
appear normal at birth, but the
calf will be a carrier of BVD its
entire life. Many of these calves
will die at birth, but as many as
50% could live and go on to
enter the breeding herd. These
animals are responsible for
spreading BVD to other cattle,
and their offspring will always
be BVD-PI positive.
How costly is BVD-PI in a
herd? According to a BEEF
Magazine article "Going after
BVD" the cost of just one
BVD-PI infected animal in a
beef cow herd will cost from
$14.85 to $24.84 per head per
year. There have been some
years that $24.84 per head may
have been all the potential prof-
it to be made in a beef opera-
tion. As costly as BVD-PI can
be to cow-calf herds it almost
doubles if that animal makes it
to the feedlot. The increased
cost of medication, death loss,
and poor doing calves can cost
feedlots up to $47 per head. The
estimated cost of BVD in the
U.S. is $2 billion per year.
Fortunately, BVD is some-
thing that we can and are con-
trolling through proper vaccina-
tion and bio-security. Another
great tool that Dr. Rueler talked
about at the recent cow calf
meeting was testing animals for
BVD. With a simple ear notch
and a $4 or $5 test you can find
out what if any animals in your
herd are persistently infected
with BVD. Other than just
increased herd health, there are
price advantages to having a
BVD-PI free herd when mar-
keting your cattle.
With the tools available
experts agree that total elimina-
tion of BVD in the U.S. cattle
herd is a very real possibility
and most agree that BVD-PI
may soon be a thing of the past.
Work with your veterinarian to
develop a cost effective BVD
control plan for your herd.

charge for producers in the area.
They include AgTexas Farm
