— Voter registration deadline is Oct 7 for election
Continued from Page 1
tions Administrator Audrey Wessels,
who added it gives residents a chance to
clear up any identification issues before
they head to the polls.
The Nov. 5 Texas Constitutional
Amendment Election will be the first
where photo ID must be presented at
the poll and the name on that ID must
match the one on the voter roll. If it does
not, the voter will have to sign an affida-
vit swearing they are indeed themselves
before they can cast a ballot.
The requirement is likely to affect
women with name changes or men who
have shortened their given names, Wes-
sels said.
“If the name doesn’t match exactly, it
doesn’t mean they are not going to get to
vote, ... but they will be required to fill
out a form,” she said.
For the next election after that, the
voter rolls will be corrected to reflect the
name on the person’s identification.
Voters without a driver’s license or
other photo ID, can obtain a free Election
Identification Card from the Department
of Public Safety.
Voters who fail to bring proper identifi-
cation to the polls will have to file a provi-
sional ballot. When they do, they will have
six days to bring in proper identification.
Early voting starts Oct. 21 with nine
proposed amendments on the ballot.
Those include:
• Proposition 1: Asks Texans to con-
sider granting a property tax exemption
for the home of a surviving spouse of a
member of the U.S. Armed Forces killed
in action.
• Proposition 2: Asks voters to elimi-
nate the State Medical Education Board
and the State Medical Education Fund,
neither of which has been in operation
for years.
• Proposition 3: Asks voters to extend
the number of days aircraft parts can be
in a location without taxation.
• Proposition 4: Asks Texans to pro-
vide partial tax exemption to the resi-
dence of a partially disabled veteran or
his/her spouse if that home was donated
to him/her by a charity.
• Proposition 5: Asks voters to extend
the definition of a reverse mortgage in-
volving the purchase of homestead prop-
erties.
• Proposition 6: Authorizes, if ap-
proved, a fund to be administered by the
Texas Water Development Board for the
implementation of a state water plan.
• Proposition 7: Creates, if approved,
a method to fill short-term vacancies in
city offices.
• Proposition 8: Involves the Hidalgo
county hospital district.
• Proposition 9: Expands, if approved,
the sanctions the State Commission of
Judicial Conduct can issue.
Turnout is anticipated to be light for
the Nov. 5 election.
