A DPS trooper examines the scene of a rollover crash that occurred at 5:23 p.m. Tuesday. Ma-
than D. King of Livingston fell asleep while driving this 1998 blue Chevy Lumina south on
U.S. 59 North 0.9 miles north of Livingston, according to a report filed by DPS Trooper Ramey
Bass. The vehicle left the roadway to the right, crossed a private drive and flipped over several
times. It came to rest on the roof facing north.
Man dies from
May 26 crash
LIVINGSTON - A 79-year-old
Onalaska man died Saturday from
injuries sustained in a two-vehicle
crash on May 26 in Goodrich.
Clifford Levem Vowell was
pronounced dead at Memorial
Hermann Hospital in Houston where
he was taken by medical helicopter
after the 1994 Ford pickup truck he
was driving was struck by a 19%
Honda Accord driven by Matthew
Leonard James, 20, of Livingston,
according to Trooper Brent Henry.
The trooper reported that James
pulled from a crossover on U.S.
59 in Goodrich and collided with
Vowell’s northbound pickup truck.
The impact caused Vowell’s vehicle
to slide to the right and roll over,
coming to rest upright in a ditch.
James was charged with failure
to yield right of way from an
intersection in connection with the
wreck, which occurred at 6:15 p.m.
Bikers thrown by uneven pavement
GOODRICH - Two people
were injured, one critically,
when they were thrown from a
motorcycle after hitting uneven
pavement on U.S. 59 in front
of the Goodrich Post Office
Monday night.
Bruce Gilchrist, 56, of
Porter was driving a 2001
Honda Goldwing motorcycle
southbound in the inside lane
when he attempted to move to
the outside lane to pass another
vehicle, according to Texas
Highway Patrol Trooper Ramey
Bass. The outside lane had
recently been resurfaced, he said,
leaving the pavement about two
inches higher than that on the
inside lane. When the motorcycle"
struck the higher pavement it
began to flip and roll, ejecting
both the driver and his passenger
and causing them both to lose
their helmets.
Gilchrist, listed with non-
incapacitating injuries, was
transported by medical helicopter
to Memorial Hermann Hospital.
The passenger, a 38-year-
old female from Spring; was
more critically injured and was
transported by ambulance to the
Livingston hospital prior to being
flown to Hermann, Bass said.
Due to the severity of her
condition, authorities asked
that the passenger’s name be
withheld.
* No charges have been tiled in
connection with the accident,
which occurred at 9:05 p.m.
LIVINGSTON - A pizza de-
livery driver called the Livingston
Police Department after a cus-
tomer paid for an order with fake
$20 bills, LPD spokesman Lt. Matt
Parrish said Tuesday.
Officers Marty Drake and Chad
Ward interviewed the driver who
sent them to a residence where
they arrested Billy Dwayne Gal-
loway, 39, on an outstanding LPD
warrant for theft.
Drake and Ward found a comput-
er, printer, scanner at the residence
and digitally reproduced $20 bills
in the trash that were apparently
earlier attempts that the suspect
rejected as not looking authentic,
according to Parrish.
Galloway is currently being held
on a felony forgery charge and Se-
cret Service agents have been no-
tified about the alleged counterfeit
operation.
Parrish said his department has
seen an increase in the number
of bogus currency that has been
passed to local businesses.
He urged businesses to remain
alert to the texture of the bill when
handling cash and reminds them to
use detection pens as much as pos-
sible.

Law enforcement officials
indicated Leach is expected to
recover from the wound.
State and federal investigators
gathered evidence at the scene until
shortly after 9 p.m. Monday.
Leach had apparently just moved
to the Livingston area Friday.
Texas Ranger Pete Maskunas of
Lukin is leading the investigation.
Leach’s criminal history includes
a prison escape in the 1980s. He was
returned after carjacking a family in
Baytown.
He was serving a life sentence
for aggravated robbery for a
November 1984 car theft during
which he held a Louisiana family
at gunpoint while they were
stopped at a roadside park in
Baytown.
