In Calf Scramble At
’94 Houston Rodeo
HOUSTON — Robert Clark, a 16-
year-old Clifton FFA member, and
Wesley Miles, a 13-vear-old Coryell
County 4-H member, will compete in
the 1994 Houston Rodeo calf
scramble in the Astrodome
Miles, the son of Larry and Jenny
Miles, will compete Feb. 21 for one of
252 calves to be awarded at the 1994
Show.
Clark, the son of Robert and Iris
Clark, will compete Feb 28.
According to officials, the calf
scramble is one of the Show’s major
programs benefiting youthd,
requiring a yearlong commitment on
the part of the winner to the animal
project.
“Beginning with the athletic
competition in the Astrodome, the
program ends 12 months later with
top-notch competition in the
Astrohall show ring,” said a Show
spokesman.
The spokesman explained the
actual calf scramble event involves
28 energetic youngsters pitted
against 14 vigorous calves. Each
youngster is committed to capturing
and bringing a calf to the finish line
— but only the successful ones
receive $1,000 calf purchase
certificate.
The certificates are used to
purchase purebred beef or dairy
heifers. The calves are raised by the
winners for special showring
competition in the Astrohall at the
following year's Show.
“To date, the Houston calf
scramble has put almost 13,000
animals valued at more than $3
million into the hands j of Texas
youths,” the spokesman noted.
