Gap Chamber Park Committee
Sets Work Day Saturday, Nov. 21
By Carol Moulton
FEATURES EDITOR
CRANFILLS GAP - Cranfllls
Gap Community Chamber of Com-
merce met at the Cranfllls Gap
School on Thursday, Nov. 12, for its
monthly dinner meeting and a per-
formance of L.. school’s play, “The
Man in the Bowler Hat.”
During the meeting, everyone
was invited to “bring their tools and
lend a hand” at the park work day
slated for Saturday, Nov. 21. The
work day will begin at 1 p.m.
(weather permitting) and will end
around 5 p.m. with a “souping.”
The chamber will supply the
meat for the “hobo soup,” and ev-
eryone is asked to bring either veg-
etables to put in the soup or a
dessert or side dish to share, said
a spokesman.
Joe Holmes told members that
the fund applications papers have
finally been finalized for the park
project, but that the biggest prob-
lem has been in the financing sup-
port.
“There is no way that the
Septemberfest can pledge support
to the project in a way that is ac-
ceptable to the state auditors,”
Holmes said. “Unless we can work
around this in some manner, we’ll
have a serious shortfall in financ-
ing the project.”
Holmes noted that typically one
doesn’t get funding in the first year
of a grant request. “We should prob-
ably cou°l on not getting it until the
second year’s application.”
A report from the volunteer fire
department noted that the depart-
ment is still in need of donations.
“ v/e’ve replaced one truck, but we
still have a ’72 and ’76 truck that
need replacing," said David Witte.
A report from the First Respond-
ers noted that members have taken
the necessary training courses and
are now certified first responders,
and that pagers have been pur-
chased. It was noted, however, that
the defibrillator that is due to arrive
shortly is not completely paid for.
The group hopeSTtiattts January
chili supper and auction will com-
plete the payment for the equip-
ment.
In other business, the Chamber
unanimously approved a $50 dona-
tion to both the Christmas lights on
the hill and the downtown decora-
tion lights. Members also approved
a $100 donation to the Bosque
County Child Protective Service to
help with their support during the
holidays of the foster children in the
county.

Public Comment
Wanted On Boll
Weevil Eradication
AUSTIN — The Texas Depart-
ment of Agriculture is accepting
public comment through Dec. 14
on a proposal to create a new
boll weevil eradication zone for
the Northern Blacklands
The proposed zone, the North-
ern Blacklands Boll Weevil
Eradication Zone, would consist
of about 70,000 acres of cotton in
36 counties: Bosque, Bowie,
Cass, Cooke, Collin, Dallas,
Delta, Denton, Ellis, Fannin,
Franklin, Grayson, Hamilton,
Henderson, Hill, Hood, Hopkins,
Hunt, Jack, Johnson, Kaufman,
Lamar, Montague, Morris, Na-
varro, Parker, Rains, Red River,
Rockwall, Somervell, Tarrant,
Titus, Van Zandt, Wise and the
portions of Limestone and
McLennan north of Highway 84.
A rule to designate the North-
ern Blacklands zone was recom-
mended to Texas Agriculture
Commissioner Rick Perry by
members of the Northern Black-
land Advisory Committee on
Boll Weevil Eradication. The
proposal made by the committee
would simply create a zone, but
would not put an eradication
program in place.
Those wishing to submit writ-
ten comment send them to Katie
Dickie Stavinoha, special assis-
tant for Producer Relations,
Texas Department of Agricul-
ture, P.O. Box 12847, Austin
78711. Written comments must
be received by Dec. 14.
Comment on the proposed
zone will also be accepted at a
public hearing beginning a 1:30
p.m. on Dec. 2. The hearing will
be held in Ennis at the KJT Hall,
1216 South Paris.
For more information on the
proposal, contact Stavinoha at
(512) 463-7593.
