Marc's
Remarks
By Marc Johnson
This is the last article you’ll read
from me in this year of 2000. Where
did the time go?
I’ve been writin’
this mess ter
some (over) five
years and the
time continues to
pass faster and
faster. I’m havin'
a little trouble
just keepin' up.
Another Texan headed fer the
White House; finally. What a mess!
But it finally settled and we’ll just
have to watch and see how it turns
out. If he can just g: t the right folks
on the cabinet and in other posi-
tions of leadership; we’ll be alright.
As fer all them Hollywood stars
what vowed to leave this great U.S.
of A. If’n Dubya was elected —
good-bye. Do ya need any help
packin’? Will ya please do us all a
favor and take Jesse and A1 with
ya? I’m gonna bet they was all
joshin'! Why would they leave the
greatest nation in the world fer
such a stupid reason? But if they
do; good riddance!
Y’all remember Terji Buie, the
Norwegian exchange student what
stayed with Mary Hastings year
’fore last? Well, tie called her the
other night and wished all us Tex-
ans “Merry Christmas.” He was a
neat young man and we wish him
all the best.
Dad-burned Cowboys! Play like a
house-a-fire fer the first half and
then lose all their composure and
blow it all up in the second half. Said
they was just playin’ fer "pride,"
since they didn’t have a chance fer
the play-offs. Shore was a strange
way to demonstrate “pride." Next
year gotta be better.
I mentioned green catsup a few
weeks ago and didn’t never figger
to see it at my house. But, Betty and
Kevin done bought a bottle of it;
probably just to see what I'd do.
Said it s’posed to taste the same as
the red. They talked me into tastin'
it; and I reckon I got to admit, it
seems to taste the same. Ya just
need to be blindfolded to eat the
nasty lookin’ mess. I believe it'd gag
a maggot off a gut wagon. Whew'
Make a good hamburger steak look
like it needed throwin’ out Besides
that. I ain’t wantin’ to eat blind
folded. I like to see what 1 be eatin’;
all of it. Never knowingly eat it
again.
Does this time of the year be es-
pecially hard fer all you diabetics
out there9 What with all the home-
made candies and cakes and pies,
etc. you be tempted with9 Home-
made bread! Big baked taters! Ya
know ya ain’t s’posed to have none
of it. Just suffer and watch that
blood sugar. Don’t let it git off the
chart.
Christmas 2000 will be in the his-
tory books by the time ya reau Lius.
1 hope all y ’all had a blessed Christ-
mas.
All the hard work folks puttin up
all them lights and other decora-
tions be over til next year. Way time
(lyin' fer me; I may just leave 'em
up. That way, won't have to worry
bout unravelin' 'em again in 2001
and figger’n what goes where.
Many purty lights here in the Gap
community, so if ya gonna see em,
best hurry, cause they'll b< cornin'
down.
We just know them school kids
and the school sta'f enjoyin' a
few days off to ce'ebrate But
they all got to be hack in the
classroom bright am! early on
Jan 3. 2001 Don't ya just know
this time will pass mighty fast9
Hope everyone gits through
these holidays safe and sound.
Do v'all believe all the ads ter
stuff fer yore pets9 Massive
stores with nothin' in them ex-
cept stuff fer yore pets' 1 d
never have thought it. but it
bound to be workin'; they seem
to be stayin' open
More commercials per hour
on the TV now than ever before
Ya cain't even channel surf and
git away from 'em Seems all the
networks program commercials
at exactly the same time Y all
ever noticed that But that's
how they pay the bills so I
reckon ya cain't blame tue net
works fer giftin' it together
when they can They gonna miss
the bucks from all the political
stuff fer awhile
Happy New Year to all y all
Hope 2000 was good for ya
Hope 2001 will be even better
fer everybody Mebbe we ll even
see more peace on earth
Reckon9
2001 will be great if we can only
encourage everybody to simply do
“right." And pray to accept the
things you cannot change; courage
to change the things you can. and
the wisdom to know the difference
God bless us all
See ya next year.

State’s Falling Unemployment
Rate Registers 27-Year Low Mark
AUSTIN — Texas’ seasonally ad-
justed unemployment rate continues
to reflect the state's economic
strength, with the rate dropping one-
tenth of a percentage point to 4.2 per-
cent in November.
• Sustained job growth, along with
the lowest November unemployment
rate in 27 years, represents contin-
ued health of the economy and abun-
dant opportunities for Texas
workers,” Texas Workforce Commis-
sion Chair Diane Rath said.
Seasonally adjusted nonagricul-
tural jobs grew by an estimated 27,300
over the month, with annual job
growth at 2.7 percent. The Nondu-
rable Goods Manufacturing industry
added 1,900 jobs in November.
"This is the largest monthly gain
of jobs in Nondurable Goods Manu-
facturing in over six years,” said TWC
Commissioner Representing Labor
T. P O’Mahoney, "and the most jobs
added since April of 1994."
The Retail Trade industry gained
6,700 jobs in November.
“This year’s increase in Retail Trade
employment was well above the 10-
year average gain of 2,600 for Novem-
ber," said Commissioner Representing
Employers Ron Lehman, “contribut-
ing to a solid 3.2 percent annual job
growth rate in Retail Trade."
The lowest unemployment rate
among the Metropolitan Statistical
Areas was 1.4 percent in Bryan-Col-
lege Station. Austin-San Marcos was
next at 1.9 percent, followed by Lub-
bock at 2.2 percent. Dallas was next
at 2.9 percent, followed by the Fort
Worth-Arlington and San Angelo
MSAs at 3.0 percent.
The highest unemployment rate
was 14.0 percent in the McAllen-
Edinburg-Mission MSA. followed by
Courthouse Records
Brownsville-Harlingen at 8.3 percent,
and Beaumont-Port Arthur at 7.9 per-
cent. El Paso was next at 7.5 percent,
followed by Laredo at 6.4 percent.

Texas Workplace Injury, Illness
Rates Continued To Decline In '99
AUSTIN — The Texas Workers’
Compensation Commission has an
nounced that the rate of nonfatal
workplace injuries and illnesses in
Texas decreased from 5.2 incidents
per 100 full time workers in 1998 to 5.0
incidents in 1999, according to a sur
vey conducted by the TWCC. Reduc-
tions in incidents occurred in five of
the nine major Standard Industrial
Classification groups, with manufac-
turing experiencing the greatest rate
decrease ill percent) The decrease
is considered encouraging since
manufacturing has had the highest
rate of injuries and illnesses since
199! Rate decreases also occurred in
retail, wholesale, services, and trans
portation industries.
The largest incidence rate increase
occurred in the construction industry
(51 percent) with the rate for special
trade contractors (electrical, plumb
ing. heating, and air conditioning con
tractors) increasing by 84 percent
from 1998 to 1999. Incidence rates
also increased in the agriculture,
mining, fire, insurance, and real es-
tate industries.
Illnesses accounted for 5.6 percent
of the total occupational incidents in
1999. Disorders associated with re
peated trauma (such as carpal tun
nel syndrome, tendonitis, and
noise induced hearing loss) had the
highest illness incidence rate (18.9
per 10,006 full time workers) Sixty-
eight percent of repeated trauma dis
orders occurred in the
manufacturing industries.
The survey also shows that the inci
dence rate for lost work time cases in
creased from 2.7 (incidents per 100 full
time workers) in 1998 to 2.8 in 1999
