Silsbee, Texas
Dear Mr. Read:
The sponsor and the working
staff of Tiger Rag want to
thank you very much for the
delectable dinner you treated
us to at Red Carpet Inn, Tues-
day evening, May 15. The only
way the evening might have
been better would have been
to have had the pleasure of the
company of our publisher and
his charming wife.
We enjoy getting the “Rag"
all together, and our associ-
ation with the Bee has always
been most pleasant. We particu-
larly appreciate your courtesy
because otherwise there is no
credit or remuneration fo rour
efforts. It was kind of you to
do this for us.
Sincerely yours,
Jewell H. Jones, sponsor

After arriving, we built a fire,

Rep. Les Aspin (Wis.) "... I
am introducing today a com-
prehensive package of fire pre-
vention anil safety legislation.
The same legislation has been
cosponsored by 65 Members of
this House . . .
“Last year alone 210 fire-
fighters died in the line of
duty. During the 10-yaer peri-
od of 1960 to 1970, 795 fire-
fighters died—83 more than
policemen killed in the line of
duty. During the 10-year peri-
in New York City alone were
injured or burned . . .
“One bill provides for the
creation of a national fire
academy . >.
“A second bill provides the
Secretary of Commerce with
the authority to make grants to
States, counties and local com-
munities to pay up to one-half
of the cost of training programs
for firemen. Just as the LEAA
has paid for further education
and training of our police-
men . . .
“A third bill allows the Sec-
retary of Commerce to make
grants to accredited institu-
tions of higher education to
pay up to one-half the cost of
fire science programs . . .

financial aid to local fire de-
