alaska Mayor Jeanne Ann Byrd as the mayor signs a proclamation supporting the VFW’s Buddy
Poppy distribution. The poppies are assembled by disabled veterans and the proceeds from the
fund-raising campaign are used exclusively for the benefit of disabled and needy veterans and
the widows and orphans of deceased veterans. The major urged all citizens to wear a Buddy
Poppy as evidence of their gratitude to the men and women who have risked their lives in de-
fense of the freedoms which we continue to enjoy as American citizens.
Blood drive this Friday
LIVINGSTON - As part of their
Make A Difference Day activiues
(Oct. 27), on Friday, Oct. 26, from
9 a m. to 3:30 p.m., a cpmmunity-
wide blood drive will be conducted
in the multi-purpose room of the
Escapees CARE Center, Rainbow’s
End, located just south of the inter-
section of Hwy. 146 and Providence
Road at Care Center Drive. This
will be the second blood drive in a
month conducted by the Escapees
Club.
Blood donors must bring photo
I D., such as a driver’s license.
Community residents are welcome
to participate in this drive, as they
are in all Escapees blood drives.
The Gulf Coast Regional Blood
Center is always in need of blood.
Although all blood is valuable,
type-0 and type-B donors are most
needed. Blood is the most precious
gift anyone can give and each unit

of blood can help up to three indi-
viduals needing the various compo-
nents. Blood has a shelf life of only
42 days, so supplies must be con-
stantly replaced.
An individual may donate blood ]
every 56 days, and there is no upper |
age limit for donors. Donors must
be in general good health, weighing I
at least 110 pounds, and at least 17
years of age.

Band heading to contes
LIVINGSTON - The Livingston
High S88661 marching band will
compete in the Area F UEL march-
ing band competition at 3:30 p.m.
Saturday at Crump Stadium in
Alief. ■
Saturday's competition is the
next step in the band “play-off’
system. Two bands will be selected
to move on to the UIL state march-
ing band competition slated Tor
Nov. 5 in Waco.
Each band selected to perform at
the Area F contest has received a
first division superior rating in the
local regional competition. Al-
though in previous years the Are* F
competition has hosted ai many as
20 bands from the area, this year’s
competition will only host 10
bands.
Other first division bands to at-
tend Area F competition include
Dayton High School, Crosby High
School, Dickinson High School,
Silsbee High School, Lumberton
High School, Angleton High
School, Santa Fe High School,
Friendswood High School and
Channelview High School.
The Livingston High School
Band is under the direction of Le-
land P. Knapp. Assistant directors
include David Powell, Janet In-
gram, Reba Marts and Color Guard
Sponsor Judy Powell.
Airman training
LIVINGSTON - Airman Dan-
ielle Fears recently finished basic
training at Lackland Air Force Base
and is now training as an X-ray lab
technician at Shepherd Air Force
Base.
A 2001 Livingston High School
graduate, she is the granddaughter of1
Julia Duke of Livingston.
