MEETING IN THE HANGAR — The City Council, Clifton Aero owner/operator Tim Talley, and representative*
of Specialty Cleaning Services of Waco met at the Clifton Airport Thursday evening to discuss clean-up and
repair efforts following an October fire in the hangar.

relationship with the city the 16
years I’ve been here, so I'm trying
to resolve these issues without in-
volving the city’s insurance com
pany That’s why I've chosen to
repair the building at my own ex-
pense," Talley said.
Ford said falley has been given
“the right information, the right
chemicals, and the right process”
needed to properly clean the build
ing and its floor area.
Patch work had been done to the
roof in the past due to hail storms
and age Mayor Truman Blum
asked Talley if those repairs have
stopped leaks in the hangar other
than over the back offices.
"I'm not sure," Talley replied
“We have not had a good rain storm
to test it."
Ford told the Council that the
floor has been cleaned “to a pre-
loss condition" and did not see re
painting as a requirement. “But it’s
your decision whether to repaint
the floor."
Talley said if the Council wants
the floor repainted, he has some
materials already, and would pay
for the rest. “I’d like to do it, but I
would not want to be obligated to
do it at this time," he added
Mayor Blum, City Administrator
Chad Nehring, and Talley all
agreed that a document needs to be
prepared stating each party’s re-
sponsibilities in the repair of the
hangar
“It needs to state what we each
are going to do and be checked off
as we finish,” he said. Blum said
such a side agreement to the cur
rent lease, which runs approxi
mately two more years, would give
protection to both sides.
Alderman James Heid said he
believed the roof repair was not an
option but a necessity. When asked
if they agreed, Alderman Evelyn
Wright said she did. and Alderman
Joe Fry said "We’ve got to do the
roof."
Nehring noted that materials
and labor should run about $7,000.
‘‘Because of hail damage, the
Council budgeted $5,000 this year
for sheet metal repair. About $1,000
of that has already been spent,”
Nehring explained.
The Council unanimously ap-
proved the repair, with Mayor Pro
Tem Walter May and Alderman
Dennis Johnson absent A side
agreement to all other repairs was
to be presented to the Council this
past Tuesday.
In discussing the fire and subse-
quent repairs, Mayor Blum said he
appreciates what everyone has
done, “especially the fire depart
ment, which does a very good job. I
have a deep appreciation for what
these folks do for this community.”
“I also appreciate what you’ve
done to work through this,” the
mayor told Talley. “We’ve had a
good relationship and look forward
to that continuing.”
Talley added that Burk Welding
performed the roof repairs in a
“prompt and professional way,” and
that Bosque Supply “did a good job
getting us the materials in a timely
manner.”
Talley added that more fire ex-
tinguishers are being installed in
the hangar. He said the extinguish-
ers that have been in the hangar
some 17 years and serviced peri-
odically would not put out the fire.
"We actually had the fire almost
out a couple of times, but the fire
extinguishers kept running out," he
explained.
Employees of Clifton Aero were
draining fuel from a 1954 model
Cessna 180 in preparation for a
wing removal when the blaze
started Before airport workers and
the fire department could extin-
guish the fire, the Cessna was com-
pletely destroyed.
Talley and others manned fire
extinguishers and water hoses
while the call to 9-1-1 was placed to
summon help. Crews from the Clif-
ton Volunteer Fire Department
quickly responded, with Meridian
and Valley Mills VFDs each dis-
patching an engine company to the
scene in case they were needed.
As the fire grew, Clifton Aero and
Taylor Spraying Service employees
pushed one airplane out of the

hanger with one wing on fire The
wing was destroyed, but the rest of
the plane was saved.
As fire units quickly arrived on
the scene, black smoke billowed
from the building, easily visible
from all parts of the city of Clifton
The intense heat eventually melted
skylights, allowing the smoke to
vent from the roof Firefighters also
placed fans in the hangar doorway
to help remove the smoke and aid
in the firefighting measures.
Initial fire crews knocked down
the blaze with water as Engine
#322 was prepared to apply foam.
Once ready, a blanket of foam was
applied and the fire was completely
extinguished.
Damage was limited to aircraft
and the building, with no injuries to
either the firefighters or the em
ployees at the airport reported. The
building received significant dam
age, mostly to the roof of the han
gar. Smoke damage was also
present throughout the building

my friends will be able to see my
