Life is filled with events that may
affect the health insurance coverage
you need. Bach year millions of
Americans face such life events as
the birth of a baby, the onset of a
chronic condition or disabling dis-
ease, a divorce or a change of jobs.
The Health Insurance Portability
and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
includes important new-but limited-
protections for millions of working
Americans and their families.
HIPAA may:
• increase your ability to get
health coverage for yourself md
your dependents if you start a new
job;
• lower your chance of losing ex-
isting health care coverage;
• help you maintain continuous
health coverage for yoprSelf and
your dependents when you change
jobs; and
• help you buy health insurance
coverage on your oyVn if you lose
coverage under an employer’s group
plan and have no other health cover-
age available.
4-H plan approved
from page 1
The board adopted the 2001-2002
budget which reflects projected ex-
penditures of $2,483,000.
In other activity, the board
adopted a resolution approving an
adjunct faculty agreement with the
Texas Agriculture Extension Serv-
ice. With the agreement in place,
students who participate in 4-H
activities will not be counted absent
when on 4-H-related trips, because
it will be considered a school-
sponsored trip.
The board also approved budget
amendments for the 2000-2001
school year.
Among its specific protections,
HIPAA:
• limits the use of pre-existing
condition exclusions;
• prohibits group health plans
from discriminating by denying you
coverage or charging you extra for
coverage based on your or your
family members’ past or present
poor health;
• guarantees certain small em-
ployers, and certain individuals who
lose job-related coverage, the right
to purchase health insurance; and
• guarantees, in most cases, that
employers or individuals who pur-
chase health insurance can renew the
coverage regardless of any health
conditions of individuals covered
under the insurance policy.

Administration’s (HCFA) website,

Pets may need
vitamins, too
COLLEGE STATION - If Ol’
Blue seems to have lost some zip,
maybe be needs a pep pill.
Pets can require vitamin supple-
ments just like their owners, but
some extra care might be needed
before you start dishing out a lot of
pills, says Qr, John Bauer, a veteri-
nary nutritionist in the Small Ani-
mal Clinic at Texas A&M Univer-
sity.
The size of the animal, its age,
its lifestyle and other factors may
play a big role in determining if
your pet needs some vitamins.
“In general terms, if the food you
give your pet has a label that says
‘complete and balance nutrition’ the
pet is probably OK as far as getting
the proper amount of vitamins,”
believes Bauer.
“Under most circumstances, there
may not be a need to give them
extra vitamins. But there are excep-
tions to the rule.”
One might be stress.
If a pet is also used as a working
animal, such as a guide dog, or
service or guard dog, and the animal
uses up a lot of energy performing
these tasks, extra vitamins could
well be necessary, Bauer says.
