Hundreds Of Jobs Lost With Closing Of
Two Area Manufactured Housing Plants
AUSTIN - With two more
manufactured housing plants
closing recently, officials of the
Texas Manufactured Housing
Association renewed an appeal
to the 78th Texas Legislature
to correct legislation that has
cost thousands of jobs since be
coming effective at the start of
2002
TMHA Executive Director
Jodv Anderson said the closing
of Oakwood Homes plants in
Killeen and Hillsboro brings to
seven the number of manufac-
turing plants that have shut
down since HB1869 went into
effect in January.
“Thousands of Texans have
been put out of work since June
when the ejects of this legis-
lation began to be felt,* Ander-
son said. “The economy was
already hurting the industry,
but the loss of the personal
property financing option
drove another nail into the cof-
fin.”
Anderson said in addition to
the almost 2,000 jobs elimi-
nated through the loss of the
plants, thousands more were
lost through closure of retail
outlets.
“Oakwood closed the plants
in Killeen and Hillsboro, put-
ting more than 450 out of
wont,” he said “But, they also
plan to close about 35 retail lo-
cations when they leave the
state "
Earlier plant closings oc-
curred in Burleson,
Breckenridge, Wichita Falls,
Athens, and Navasota.
“HB1869 must be amended
when the legislature convenes
in January if we are to save an
industry which provides afford-
able housing to the consumers
of Texas,” Anderson said.
He said the use of personal
property loans to finance
manufactured housing has
been an option In Texfs and
across the nation for the past
50 years. 1
“Personal property loans
have provided a finance option
for many families who fall be-
tween government subsidies
and the ability to qualify for a
conventional real estate loan
and for those who, for whatever
reason, may choose not to en-
cumber their private property.”
