Derr Talks On Rotary Foundation At Lunch
CLIFTON — Past District Gov
ernor Pat Derr spoke on the mul-
tiple projects of the Rotary
Foundation at Thursday’s meet
ing of the Bosque County (Clifton)
Rotary Club.
Derr complimented the local
club on its foundation contribution
in the past year, saying that it al
most reached the $100 per mem
her mark at $93.79.
The foundation basis is the
elimination of poverty, environ
mental conservation, food secu-
rity, healthcare, education,
medication, and world under
standing through peace.
She noted that Rotary has con
tributed $600 million to the
worldside polio project.
“But most important is the
thousands of Rotary volunteers
who have, given to eradication of
polio worldwide," said Derr. "We
still have to eradicate it in four
counties — Nigeria, Afghanistan,
Pakastan, and India.”
Derr spoke on the following
projects of the Rotary Foundation,
including:
• Peach Scholars program for
International Studies, which in-
cludes 53 countries.
• The Cultural Study Exchange for
non Rotarians and Rotarians alike.
• Ambassadorial Scholarships
for international study.
• District Simplified Grants
which help support the projects of
local Clubs.
• Matching grants which are
available for large grants world-
wide. Derr reported that Rotary
has spent over $180 million in 115
countries since 1965.
• Literacy and sustainable food
worldwide.
Derr noted the importance of
sustainable food. Most the counties
do not need food drops, as much as
they need to be able to produce their
own food supply, she added.

Need To Halt
CLIFTON — During recent fire
calls outside of the city limits, Clif-
ton Volunteer Fire Department
has noticed a tendency for the
marker cones to disappear.
The cones are set on the side of
the road to show trucks where to
turn for a fire a safety factor.
If the trucks are going into an
unknown area the cones are the
only thing to lead them in.
After the fire is out and the de-
partment returns to obtain the
cone, it is often gone.
“If you live out in the country
and your house was on fire,
wouldn't you like to know that the
local fire department can find
you,” asked a CVFD spokesman.
“As the lead truck goes in, it al
ways drops a cone to mark the
turn for the next trucks. If the
cone is not there, time is wasted
and lives and property could be
lost.”
