The Winkler County News

Pull up a chair and sit down
and let’s talk a bit, west Texas style.
I have some important information
to pass on to you.
There are over 26,000,000
Americans that have diabetes! That
is almost 1 out of every 10 of us.
According to medical research this
number is constantly going upwards
at a very rapid pace.
Some people are bom with di-
On The Beat with Sheriff George Keely
abetes and we call them “Type 1”
diabetics. Others develop diabetes
overtime (we used to say these were
older onset diabetics) and we call
these people “Type 2” diabetics.
Type 2 diabetes is rapidly becoming
almost an epidemic in America.
A few years back I was diag-
nosed with Type 2 diabetes. I be-
come very concerned about my
health and went to a seminar at
Odessa Medical center and what I
learned scared me to death! I im-
mediately took some steps to help
me live better and hopefully longer
with this disease. I have fought this
terrible disease for numerous years
and I control it with oral medica-
tion, exercise, and diet. This is an
extremely tough disease to fight
if you enjoy eating. I enjoy eating
just about everything (1 do not like
creamed onions!).
The trouble with diabetes is that
if it is not controlled it can cause a
multitude of very serious problems
such as heart disease, strokes, kid-
ney failure, and it is the number one
cause in America of blindness!
Diabetes is an expensive dis-
ease to have and to control. You
will need a glucose meter and all

those expensive test strips and lan-
cets (that is a medical word for a
very sharp needle that you use to
get blood from your body), as well
as going in a couple times a year
for eye exams and lab work every
3-4 months. Statistics show that if
you are a “healthy diabetic” (Now
that is a contradictory term if ever
there was one) that you can spend
up to $55,000 per year! If you do
not control your diabetes you can
end up spending far more than you
can imagine.
I would venture, if I were a
gambling man, that millions of
Americans have diabetes and do not
know it. It is one of those “silent
killers” diseases that can go unde-
tected until it does a lot of damage.
In fact most people find out that they
have diabetes because of the effects
on other parts of the body. They be-
gin having heart problems, vision
problems, or kidney problems and
when they go get checked by a phy-
sician the diabetes gets discovered.
Unfortunately great damage may
have occurred and then they are
fighting this terrible disease along
with other serious complications!
This can not only be costly but can
also be deadly!
If you are experiencing a high-
er level of thirst, if you get up fre-
quently at night to urinate, if you
are having blurry vision, or if you
are having mood swings you might
be diabetic. If you get fatigued eas-
ily but feel much peppier after you
eat, you might be diabetic. If you
are overweight and are experienc-
ing any of these symptoms I men-
tioned, you may be diabetic.
Diabetes can be controlled but
you must know that you are diabetic
and then you must get treated! Your
medical team can assess you and
then set you up on a treatment plan
and you can live a better and longer
life. On the other hand, if you have
this disease and do nothing about
it, you are opening the door for a
shorter and less quality style of life.
Take the chance out of your
life and go see your family doctor
and request that they check you for
diabetes. It won’t take much of your
time and it will be the best money
you ever spent! They can do a glu-
cose test right in their office and
depending on these results, they
can order more tests and then if you
have diabetes they can get you on
the road to recovery!
I mention these things to you
because I am a diabetic and since I
began treatment, the quality of my
life has been enhanced. Now stop
goofing off and get after it!
God Bless you and be safe!
THANK YOU
I would like to thank everyone for your
prayers before, during and after my sur-
gery; and for the cards, letters, food, and
best wishes etc. But most of all for be-
ing my friend and caring about me. Your
friendship is irreplaceable and I love you
all. All the tests came back great. Thanks
again from the bottom of my heart.
