day baring convincing; proof that It is worse than
useless It Is absolutely suicidal tor us to look for
protection to the Congress of the United States or
even to the Constitution of the Union. See tLe fate
of Judge Lorlngwho baa been made a marlyr for
his fidelity to that portion of the Constitution of the
country which gare us protection. The constitution
and the laws were first trampled upon by an lofaria-
ledmobjuid blood-shed and murder were the result
sow the murderers are protected la the most
shameless undeniable and undented violation of law
thai was erer witnessed ertn In countries undergo
lag revolution and where all laws are disregarded.
Even the sanctuary of Justice is inrsded by this fell
spirit of faocticism in The Cradle of Liberty" and
the land of the Pilgrim Fathers" where once the
TlcUms of witchcraft were sacrificed by hecatombs
to oppease the spirit of persecntion In the forefathers
of the present race who were themstlrss s'are
holders. The spirit is the same now at then but
directed lo different objects. The puritanical slare-
holders of former dsys were Just as ready to immo-
late the upright judge who would dare to gire the
protection of law to the unfortunate Tlctlm charged
with witchcraft aa their descendants now are to
expel from the bench a judge whose Integrity whose
virtue and learning hare been an honor to the
udiciary of that State. We hare often aaU that the
only protection the South can hare for their institu-
tions most btla their own united efforts In their
determination sot to submit to such outrages upon
their rights any longer. How can we longer look
to the constitution and laws when. we see them
thus shamefully trampled under loot? Missouri has
set us aa example worthy of Imitation. Standing
upon the borders her citlseai hare nobly met the
enemy and deflated them most algually. Ihe bold
and intrepid Atchison has prored himself a moat
able and fearless champion C the Bovitt. and nor
than auy man we cm now name he deserves all
honor from the friends of lbs South In this first great
effort to repel the enemy after the Constitution and
laws hare failed to giro us protection.
Ms. Sotxa. Ths friends of this gentleman held a

Ens. News Spring with all Its beauty has at last
dawned on us. The last has been an exceedingly long
and cold winter. The present an exceedingly back-
ward spring. There Is one general complaint of
pooratands of corn many farmers being compelled to :
plant twice and after all sot succeeding according
to our expectations. Bat few of otr farmers in thla
section of the State hiTe as get finished planting
cotton owing to the backwardipriag iu one sense
but more particularly the planting has been delayed
from the great scarcity of seed. There la scarcely
moisture enough In the land lo bring up the second
planting of corn. Our present prospects are gloomy
enough ; poor at ends of corn and com Itself exceed-

We hsre had an unuFUal spell of warm weather

bis been very oppree-irc. The cotlon as jet Is

very aevcrely for the want of rain. It It universally
conceded to be the most backward Spring wo have
had iu Texas for years. The prairies ai usual at ILlj

the long drought are everywhere visible and its
long continuance U bow beginning to excite consider
able alarm among the farmers.
Building with concrete bad jast been commenced
when I was here a year ago since which its adap
tion lo thTa climate has been fitrly tested and it is
regarded so far superior to all other building mate-
rial that nearly one half of the bones in Seguln aro
sow built In this way. When finished they look
much neater than either frame or stone buildings
and are infinitely more durable than the former
The cost I am informed U about one third that of
lumber or stone and they can ! constructed with
out the aid of mechanics so lhat do mm however
poor need be without a house to lire In. Since this
mode of building has been Introduced Scgcln has
Increased very rapidly more so I think within tea
putlwelts months than any interior town in the
Stale except Sao Antonio. Look In whatever direct
tiou you will buildings are golo? up and everything
seems in a prosperous coalition. The schools are in
a very ilearUhiog state cum be rin; at the female
academy about seventy pupils and at the melees
t&bliabment something orer forty. Much of the
success of Seguln baa been owing to Ihe establish
ment cf those two institutions of learning and
much credit is due to the citizens fortbelr esterpri-e

vantages.
