V Wc have bad the pleasure this morning
of meeting our old friend Br. Frauds Moore .
Jr. who is Just from the Northern States
We are glad to see him in excellent health
and spirits. He 'has enjoyed superior oppor-
tunities of forming correct estimates of the
probable results of the present great contest
forthePresidencyf and we judge from his
long practiced habits of close 'observation
that his conclusions if not fully verified may
come sear to the troth; at least those of our
edtlxens who have been so long accustomed to
reading bis views on all questions in the
"Telegraph cannot fail to be interested in bis
opinions on the present political contest. He
was in Pennsylvania at the time of the late
elections in that 8tale and Informs us that
there were but two tickets voted for namely
the Democratic ticket and the Union ticket
which embraced a union of all opposed to the1
Democratic party ; and as the Democrats car-
ried the Slate against this combination he
says It is now admitted by the opponents of
that party that It is bound to be triumphant
in the present contest "Dtt M saya It Is gen-
erally believed at the. North that the Demo-
cratic party win carry Illinois by a large
majority and New Jersey also but not by so
decided a vote ; and that no doubt is enter-
tained but that California will be 'largely
Democratic. These Are ajl the Tree States
the Democrats count upon besides Indiana
unless Delaware be considered one which hss
already been carried by that party. Dr.M
entertains no doubt but that the Democratic
party will carry all the Slave States without
exception Maryland which is considered the
most doubtful he says will give handsome
Democratic majorities everywhere out of Bal-
timore. This calculation of coarse secures the elec-
tion of Buchanan by a very large majority.
Dr.M thinks the chances are that New Xork
will be carried by the American party thongh
the Black Republicans count upon carrying
that great State. The Democrats stand no
chance in New York. But Dr. M. thinks New
Tork Is the only State In which the American
party nave a reasonable chance or success
This calculation gives Fremont ten Free
States; but Dr. Moore only of course gives
this as the probable result from the best
means he has of judging There are chances
and many will donbtlesssayy very strong prob-
abilities that Mr. FUlmfre will 'carry Massa-
chusetts and some of the Slave States partic-
ularly Maryland and Kentucky. .Next Tues-
day will decide the great question and in
about a week later we shall probably get the
data for a more definite and reliable conclu-
sion aa regards tha final results.

The New Tork Journal of Commerce or Wed-
nesday last saya :
Yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock the U. 5
steamer Arctic arrived at Brooklyn navy yard
from her expedition across the Atlantic She
completed her undertaking In the most satis-
factory manner. She sounded the Atlantic all
the way across finding the greatest depth
2070 fathoms (more than two miles ) It was
not accomplished without difficulties as many
of the instruments used were new Inventions;
but the persevering spirit of Capt. Berryman
and his officers conquered every obstacle
The bed of the ocean In the section travers-
ed by the Arctic is a plateau as alredy an
nounced by Capt. Berryman who bad twice
before sounded across the Atlantic The bot-
tom in the deeper part Is a very fine mud or a
mouse-gray color so soft that the sounding
instrument frequently sank several feet into
the mud. They brought up specimens of the
bottom at every sounding in quills which
were attached to the end of the sounding in-
strument. Towards the shore on each side
this mud changes into a fine green ooze No
other substances were met with no rock any-
thing that .might prove fatal to a telegraphic
wire There seems to be now nothing to hin-
der the great work to unite Europe and Ame-
rica by means of a telegraph w.;e an under-
taking so grand that few thought it possible
The whole distance across was found to be 1-
640 sea miles from St. John. N. F. to Yalen-
tia Harbor Ireland. The greatest depth was
found nearly In the centre between these two
places. The profile of the Atlantic bed on
this route is of by far easier grade than many
of our railroad profile

OTJtt ELECTIONS.
Our confederacy which has received the
appellation or the Model Republic" has now
been In operation for about three-fourths of a
century and has conferred upon the people
living under It whether or native or foreign
origin a degree of prosperity happiness and
civil liberty unknown in any other govern-
ment or nation or which history gives any
accounts
Heretofore wc have never witnessed our
elections without seeing In the quiet orderly
submission of the defeated a happy and
sure guarantee of the stability of our Bepub-
lican institutions strange as it may seem to
those persons who stndy only the surface of
affairs. The so called Bevolutions of France
except the one in 17S0 have done little
more to change the internal pobcy of the Gov-
ernment than a transfer of power from one
party to another lnrougnout an tne ranch
disturbances for example from all the muta
tions from so called Bepublics to monarchies
and thence to Empires the laws between man
and man hare remained the same; the munic-
ipalities have continued to be governed after
the old fashion; the great body of the people
have not in any way felt the alteration But
such transfers of the executive power have
never taken place without bloodshed. 'But
hitherto In this confederacy onr party tri-
umphs which hare usually made a total
change In the federal policy of the country
a change too that has sometimes been so
great and to sullen as to operate seriously to
the injury of some of our industrial pursuits
and investments of capital have neverthe-
less taken place not only without any demon-
trations of violence but in the most peaceable
manner; and though the canvaa may have
been conducted under the highest state of ex
citement and with a resort by both parties
to every legal mns to secure success that
human idgennity could devise yet as soon as
the result is declared in spite of the earnest-
ness which each party feels In the conviction
that it Is In the right and the other in the
wrong the defeated party has acquiesced
with a good grace and without even an inti-
mation or thought of further opposition. So
deeply seated has been the conviction of all
parties that it Is their paramount duty to
submit to the great doctrine that " tie
mil of the People should ruU when legally
and constitutionally made known according
to the forms of our federal compact. As ours
bowlrer is nota consolidated government
but a confederacy or league of Sovereign and
equal States so by " the will of the people" Is
meant the will of 'the States as such subject
to the modifications or restrictions of the fed-
eral compact to which those States have
assented.
But uolwUbttanllnjt we hie si much rea-
son to congratulate ourselves on the quiet and
peaceful termination of our past Presidential
elections yet the experience or the past few
yean has shown a great and alarming Increase
In the excited state of party feeling during
those great content for supremacy which
have unfortunately for the credit of our
country too often been attended with scenes
of violence approaching to bloodshed and the
slaughter of our citizens at the polls tn many
of the cities of this Union it -has been found
necessary of late years as a proper and pru-
dent preparatory measure to have a military
force In readiness to protect the legal voters
of the country while in the exercise of this
great privilege of freemen against regularly
organized bands of ruffians armed with dead
ly weapons and evidently acting under prc-
concerted'aignals and with their plans of
operation previously arranged and agreed
upon. Have we not reason for the most se-
rious apprehension not only for the perpetu-
ity of this Union but for the preservation of
our liberties under any form of government
when party violence Is carried to such exces-
ses? Heretofore it has justly been our boast that
the quiet andn orderly manner In which our
elections hare been conducted and the mutual
good will and friendly feeling with which all
parties have harmonized in the results hare
presented a striking contrast to the manner of
conducting elections in the pretended repub
lies of Mexico and South America or the hml
ted monarchies of Europe We now however
find that the enemies or free governments are
pointing with apparant exultation to the
vio1enttnmultaous bloody conflicts which have
disgraced many parts of our country of late
years. foreign journals renewing we senti
ments of monarchical and despotic powers
who have long been dreading the influence of
our example upon'their own subjects do not
hesitate to herald the increasing party vio-
lence and lawlessness attending our great
struggles for the Presidency as a sure indi-
cation of the approaching dissolution of this
Union. Shall we continue to furnish onr ene-
mies with evidence for such an argument?
Another great trial of party strength is near
at handand with the indications before us we
do not think that any well informed person
free from the violent party excitement of the
day can say there Is not reason for the most
serious apprehensions for the consequences
But we trust our own State and especially
our own city will furnish no such grounds for
exultation to the enemies of republicanism

LATER FROM KANSAS
Capture of Pcmeroy and Eldridge with
Two Hundred and Fifty Armed Men
Abolitionists Still Bobbing.
A correspondent or the St Louis Republi-
can writing from Westport October 14tb
communicates the following intelligence :
Col J C. Anderson has just arrived from
Lecomnton br In cine some important news.
Two hundred and fifty Abolitionists under
romeroyanu tidnugc were captured on tne
10th inst a few miles from the Nebraska
line by Col bt George 'Cook. Lane and
Brown escaped These men were fresh from
the East under military drill and equipped
with all the munitions of war. Amongst
other things they had thirty dragoon saddles
and not a single horse; they expected to
"press" alias steal norses tor meir saaaies
That is the reasonable conclusion It is
expected that Gov. Geary will disarm these
fellows and escort them out of tbe Territory
leaving Pomeroy and Eldridge perhaps lor
trial on the charre or treason
Notwitbstading his' activity and deter-
mination to establish a peace the Abolition
ists in me neignoornooa 01 rraine iiiy are
still robbing and ordering away the pro-
slavery inhabitants Several families passed
through here to-day leaving because they
could keep nothing and had been advised to
leave or take the consequences. They were
objects of pity ; having lived through the war
and breasted all the difficulties they only
left when starvation stared them In the face
and the rigors of a Kansas winter; to which
they would be exposed and for which they
were unprepared began to forshadow them-
selves in the early frosts of October.
The Governor having sent all his available
force to the North has not yet been able to
break up old Brown's nest of pirates on the
south side of Kaw. Aa Col. Cook is returning
we may expect it to be done speedily.
Advance in Liquors. The Charleston
Courier ha a letter from Bordeaux dated
August 5th which says that the grape crop
will be very short this year not exceeding
one-fifth tbe usual quantities. Wines and
brandies have advanced enormously and
reached the highest point attained within a
iewyars pan.
