Gen. Van Dora
This distinguished officer is now on his way
to Virginia there to tike command of a larce
portion or the numerous' and splsndid civaliy
which is being added to the Army of the Po-
tomac In that arm of thotervice he Is thor-
oughly at borne and should the occasion otTcr
we are confident that our Southern Marat will
do honor to his native Stale Mississippi and
gain forhimself a brilliant place inthe annals
of the War for Southern Independence.
Gen. Von Dora's duties in Texas since be
asumed command bavo been very onctous
and have been faithfully attended to; opening
with the capture of the Star of West followed
by the capture of Sibley's command near In-
dianola and then by the capture of Reeve's
command near San Antonio. lie thon rapidly
and most efficiently organized Ford's and Mc-
Culloch's regiments fjr the Frontiir and has
since been rery busily engaged in the rautti
fariouR labors of his department. Wo need
cot detail them here. Ilis resources iu aims
and mojej have been limited but with the
aid of un excellent StaS he has succeeded in
doing much to place his department in an till-
elect condition tor active service. Not boioj;
an engineer or aitiliery officer it was iot to
be expected that he should plan oat for our ex
tensiTO and exposed sea coast such a system of
defense is officers trained specially in those
branches of the service would design aad

self wo belierc when here.

on the ground that they and their arms wou'd

Gen. Van Dora felt acutely tbo change in
the popular feeliog towards him on this ac
count; but he must hare been aware that this
feeling was confined naturally to the parties
interested and their friends : and bo is too old
n soldier to let such considerations however
painful to him privately intcrefcre Willi what
he may have deemed his duly in so respenri-
blea position as commanding general of this
Important department. The gallant soldiers
who disliked his opposition to tbeir march to

greet him there with a friendly cheer. Thej

of Texas when to follow Earl Van Dcrn was
to follow to battle cad to victory.
Etc leaving Sin Antonio hindquarters of
the department. Gen. Van Dora was the recip-
ient of a felicitous testimonial of the citizens'
regard for him in the sbaps of a splendid ball
given him at tbo Casino Uall. Tbo whole
community readily took pirt in it and it ts
described as a most elegant fair.

has been published in another isiue. It is brief
