There is a pleasure in the pathless woods
j There is a rapture in the lonely shore
"There is society where none intrudes
" By the deep sea and music in iLs roar."
Ciitt.DE Harold.
Oh how I love Ihe sea the dark blue sea
The pale the gray thewlfite the foaming sea
The calm the placid or the bellowing sea !
By turns it roars it thunders or it moans.
In every change I love it still. And with it
Daily I converse. It seems a friend
A loved companion one who to knowledge adds
The charm of sympathy untiring patient.
Its ceaseless flow is music's voice is language
Universal ; and every human feeling
Is its theme. B ut most it speaks of Heaven ;
Of Maj'csty Divine; f powar omnipotent
Of Hut who said " Here shall thou come
There thy proud waves be stayed." Of Him
Who " Pleiades' sweet influences can bind
Or Orion's golden belt unloose"
I love thec sea; Leonid embrace thee and -
r My cares forget. In thy wide bosom there is
Room for miseries like mine. Alone
I should not be for in thy depths is one
To w horn my faith was pledged. Oh w hat a world
Of trials have been mine. Whatswcllsof anguish
What billowy cares were left for me widowed
To buffet and to stem sinoc thy blue waters
Closed on him so mourned so loved"
So honored so impressed with nature's signet
Of nobility of mental grandeur!
And w hat a knell was that to the sick heart!
Never-to-be-forgotten sound I hear it
Yet in the roaring tempest the whispering breeze ;
The bellowing breakers or the gentle wave
That murmuring laves my feet. It calls
It answers to my sighs it says hero
Is thy home here is a place for thee.
There's welcomein the sound and quietness and peace.
There I could rest there the true Lethe find.
What wealth is treasured in the sen ! What laves
Within the mermaid's coral caverns sleep !
What mysteries lie hid from mortal ken or aim !
Rapt thought bewildered lost in mazy wanderings
'Mongst the infinity of waters peopled all
And filled with untold wonders soars above
To lighter elements; and rushing through
Illimitable space hung with night's starry limps
Guides tothemariner through trackless devious ways
Worlds upon worlds seeks the creating and

was rapture to think I loved to feel I was be-
loved; and I have sat and thought and wonder
ed if it could be true ; and then 1 have thanked
my Heavenly Father for having formed one
heart to beat in unison with mine. I was de-
cieved ; so fair a show so hypocritical an array
of honorable sentiments might have decieved
a more matured mind than mine.
When thou didst swear eternal constancy I
felt my heart would never change and I believ-
ed thec. Maidens be not too prompt to credit
faithless vows. They cost a man but little and
are ever at hand if he thinks by them to raise a
smile. No; look for that devotion which as I
since have learned speaks by actions more
than words. That flatters not. Give not your
heart to one who praises rriur bright eyes and
graceful form but wait for one who can value
the heart and mind that form enshrines.
To me my Edwin was as the ocean to the
river. All my thoughts tnded in him. I did
wish to contribute secretly and silently but
constantly to bis advancement and then to bor
row mv lustre from him. Think you I aimed
at governing him? Oh! no; 'twere neither
riht nor seemly. Whene'er his lore could not
grant my requests I had gladly yielded to his
superior wisdom and rejoiced that I had found
a guide as well as friend.

I could have borne it all in silence if I had

Now this was making me the. sole cause
of the change of plan's when I knew that they
had more important business at home than I
had : so I determined to ship the responsibility
from tiiy shoulders or lake the trip.

that the young woman is there and she does
the duty of a common sailor for a long time
generally about eight nrnine months; the song
concludes with the catasttophe he either shoots
her or she stabs him for revenge. I recollect
detached portions of one of these beautiful com-
positions. Thb following lines was part of the
tiird verse :
J " She dressed herself in men's attire
And went on board of ttic man o' war
Her lilly white hands were bedaubbed o'er

Now this is what I call good poetry in omt
sense of the word .for it describes exactly whU
was done without any far-fetched sicthes an(
V. would not listen ih this so we were com-
pelled unwillingly to change the theme and de-
termined to take the goods on pack mules in
stead of the ox-cart and make a hasty trip to
San Antonio Austin and back to Galveston.
We all agreed in regretting the haste which
would permit but a glance at the heavenly
country on this route ; but we agreed to spend
the whole of the next summer in feasting our
eyes oil its beauties.
''Then why1' cried V. ! should we make
this forced march against our interests and in-
clinations. 1 propose that we postpone the
trip until next summer and turn our steps
homeward in the morning: I know that we
ought all to return and I say let's do so."
'Give us your hand" cried J. "it's just
what I've wanted to say for a week but feared
you woutd think the infernal Cnmanches'were
at the bottom of it.''
"Me too'' cried W. and we laughed hearti-
ly as each told how anxiously he had tiied to
dissemble his own wishes and draw out the
others.
