THE GREAT WESTERN.
"Liberty and the Union forever the principles of Washington
Jtf croon and Jackson."
IN proposing to establish in theaty of New Orleansa new paper
underthe above ntle weare encouraged by the glowing and mag-
nificent prospects which seem to hover around this mighty Empo-
rium of the West pointing its destinies to a summit of commercial
grandeur to which no city in the world can ever expect to reach.
Nor arc those prospects confine alone to New Orleans. When we
take into view the numerous wide-spread and extended arms of the
noble Mississippi winding themselves through an extent of country
so immensely vast; embracing the most fertile and productive region
perhaps in the known world; with a climate and scenery as delight-
ful as nature could form them ; and a population of hardy indus-
trious freemen increasing with every hour of the day wc do not hes-
itate in declaring our opinion Jthat the West is destined at an early
day to be one of the finest the noblest section of country on the
face of the globe; and that New Osleaxs as a commercial city
may at no very distant period claim the proud appellation of Mii-
TIts Or THE WOBLO. (
With such a field than as is spread before us we cannot but (eel
conscious of our success in the important labors wbich we are about
to undertake. Located as we shall b& at the reneral centre of the
almost entire commercial business of the "ureal West" and de-
signing that our paper shall embrace all intelligence of importance of
the United States and of Foreign Governments it will be found
especially interesting and useful to every class of our fellow citizens
throughout the Western country.
The Gbeat Westekh wUI be devoted mainly tO( Commerce will
support the interests of Agriculture and will take itspohucal posi-
tion and Dlant. its standard upon the broad parapet of Dcmocraev s
it will also extend its nonce to the interests of Mechanics and to City
Nctrs de.
Commmce. The larger portion of ihis paper will be smelly com-
mercial. All intelligence of importance of this character both domes-
tic and foreign wdfbe summed up at as early a moment as possible
so as to afford our mercantdepatronsevery description oPncwswhcn
they can desire under this head. i .
AcaicciTCBE. While every other branch of industry in- the United
States is receiving fresh and encouraging impulses for perseverance
this most important of all seems to flag behind the general march
of improvement and prosperity; and instead of bang placed at the
head of our general national policy and receiving that Kistenng care
mid protection to which it is pre-eminently entitled is left to grope
its way simply by the dint of that perseverance and unwearied in-
dustry so characteristic of our hardy coumrymen.
twill be our especial care to sustain the interests of this class of
our fellow cinzens.
Potmcs This department of our paper is one in which every
class of our citizens is interested. Under this head we shall give the
general political intelligence of the whole country; while wc as the
conductors of a public journal are determined without fear favor
or anectiont to support with all our zeal such measures of policy
as alone will tend m. our opinion to the promotion of our general
propenty as a people the perpetuation of our liberties and our be-
lovea union.
nle: and to this end wdi all our energies be dirccb
With regard to the great questions of policy which are now agitat-
ing iho people of the United Steles respecting the currency we
unhesitatingly declare our entire preference cf the Independent
Treasury System from our bchef of its strict constitutionality and
in its tendency better calculated to promote the general prosperity
of all classes than any other which in our view can be concetved-
We arc strict constructionists ol the Federal Constitution and
shall alwavs oppose those splendid schemes or 'American Systems'
of monopoly which have eer characterised the policy f the Feder
ol opposition recognising no implied interpretations 6t that instru-
ment and believing that the -GENERAL WELFARE' of every
portion of our wide- spread confederacy depends on a slnct adherence
to its plain and straightforward meaning we shall not be sparing in
our expositions and denunciations of those daring attempts which
have and are now being made by the reckless and aspiring leaders of
the Federal Pastt to rend asunder this glorious Chabteb of our
rights and liberties and rear upon its nuns a splendid AaisTocaacr
ot wealth and power.
Earnestly advocating therefore as we shall always da these great
and tundamental pnnciples of our government which were conceiv-
ed by a virtuous and patiioucancestry while struggling for the rights
and liberties of mankind we shall in all cases give our support for
public offices to such men as we are assured shall have the patriot-
ism talents firmness and disposition to sustain and carry out those
pnnciples successfully. With all our zeal and ability therefore we-
shall advocate the re-election or M4RTIN VAN liUREN' for the
next Presidential term with the fullest confidence in his exalted ta-
lents tntegnty and patnousm convinced that upon his success de-
pends in a very great measure the firm and lasting establishment
of those glonous pnnciples of our revolution so admirably acted up-
on by WASHrsGrox Jeiteesos Madison and Jackson-. And for
for the second office in the gift of the American people wc shall as-
cordially give our support to the Hon. Johx Foestth now Secreta-
ry of State.
In announcing our preference of these talented pamoti'c long-tried
and approved statesmen for the highest offices in the goverument we
feel a glowing confidence m the almost unanimous approval of our
fellow citizens of the West with an abiding belief that they will rally
around the standard thus laised proudly unfurUng to the breeze the
names of these distinguished individuals.
Mechanics. Under this head that large and respectable portion
of our fellow citizens among whom wo have the honor of classing
ourselves shall have a hcanng. We invite them to the use of our
columns. Their nghts and interests must be sustained
Domestic and Foreign Intelligence Under these difiercnt heads
will be found all important general intelligence both at home and
abroad.
City Noes This head wUI embrace all matters and occurences
of interest of every character relating to or transpiring within the
