feWow CUizcns:rr-The fact lliat Was-
aingiqp has been designated as. I lie
-place for the assembling of the Con
ventioo next spring tne fact that irom
its handsome situation and central po
virion there is a rong probability of
its becoming the fcture capital ot i ex-
as. The fact that -you have a deep
interest in being correctly informed of
all the doings of the Convention and
the legislatures that may hereafter its
at this place; and the fact that there is
no printing press here to give you that
information are the gropuds upon
which we ask and expect your patrou
are. But as the .Press is calculated to
'lo much evil as -well as good .and as
we have no opinions that we are unwil-
Jin" should be known we deem it pro-
'per to make so far as the limits ot a
-i.rospectus will admit a disclosure of
the objects to which our paper is devo
ted.
Our first object will be .to make our
paper what its name purportsa faithful
reporter of the true situation of the
country and of all .legislative and con-
ventional proceedings and to do with
neatness aud despatch any public pnn--ting
that mav be required tobe done-nt
this place and to give at this critical
moment of our history all foreign news
involving the public inte.rest.
The columns of our paper will be o
pen to every citizen to express his
sentiments onany subject of public in-
terest but shall never become vehicles
'for the dissemination ol 'pergonal abuse.
In our editorial capacity we-will speak
.of the public acts of public men with
a freedom becoming the conductors of
an Independent Press. Against all mo-
.nopolies and hereditary privileges we
will -ever maintain an uncompromising
opposition.
We came here Fellow citizens to
iattle for the principles proclaimed to
4he worldat Philadelphia in 177b' for
fiifedom of conscience and an equality
)f rights and to the maintainance of
jheseoui paper will be devoted. We
.will be gpverned by principle and not
.by party; for we have no party in
ierests to advocate we belong to none
We ace unknown to all. As public
men we belong to our God and our
.country; as private citizens to our
tlod our country and our friends
Our politicaf motto is "measures fikst
men nextv"
We believe that the Mexican Federal
Constitution has been openly violated
and forcibly destroyed-that Texas is
no longer bound by the decrees of the
Mexican Government but is free to
pdnut anv form of Government as a
fnajority'of the people my agree up-
ooand that she ought in Convention
to make a declaration of this right and
go into .the formation of such a Govs
ernment as may be thought best adapt
ed to her present condition. The literal
ry and religious aspect of our paper
must hereafter show for itself.
We have spoken thus freely that you
might know something of the character
our paper is designed to sustain.
Respectfully
WM. W. GANT
ANDREW J. GREER.
