In Texas it is otherwise; a few thousand people
whose dwellings are usually built upon the banks
of the streams are scattered over a prodigious ex-
tent of territory and the intervening country from
river to river "is frequently a broad prairie without
a single habitation to attract the eye or a human be'
ing to greet the traveller on his way; and if per
chance a fellow joumeycr be met upon the road
joy glows upon each countenance the heart swells
with gladness and the travellers address each other
with the. enthusiasm of old acquaintance after a
long separation the eager question is put and as
rapidly answered. "What news from the West?"
comes from him who faces the setting sun. The
news is told pleasure beams from the eye or sor
row clouds the brow according to the tenor of the
reply. But even if the tale bring pain it brings a
greater pleasure for the enquirer soon knows the
story and braces his resolution and nerves his arm
to meet the worst that may come dauntless a the
hero. But then the description of the country
the fertile soil the delightful landscapes ihc pure
and rapid streams the benign and grateful almos-

tempt him onward to the terrestrial cljscum to en
joy luxuries so grateful to the heart; and all the dan
gers of the way Uic threatened scalp'ng knife of
the lurking Indian cannot deter him from the cn-
iovment of such pleasures. Allow me then Sir to
indulge in the customs of my country and though 1
in m vmi n stranncr. ncrmit me to address you at
least as familiarly as 1 would a stranger upon one
of our prairies and to say to you in a welcome voice
Good morning Sir.'''
But I have still another claim for this privilege
in the circumstance of your having a favorite lamb
in your fold which you obtained honorably from
my kins-people. Towards this lamb my heart yearns
'.villi kindness and 1 long to learn of its welfare.
JLct vour answer give me this joy.
"Your most respectful Si obed't scrv't.
The Havre cotton merchants according to news
by the late foreign arrivals have lost twenty-five mil-
lions of francs in consequence of the late pressure
.and decline in the market. In the month of .May
the receipis of the customs of that harbor decreased
considerably.
The important and economical improvement in
smelting iron ore now practised in urcat Britain
lias been introduced with complete success by the
spirited and wealthy proprietors cf the extensive iron
works iu York and Lancaster counties Pa. the
.Messrs. Grubbs one of whom las recently return-
ed from England whither he was induced to go
with a view of examining tto great Welsh and
isco'.ch iron works. The improvement as we un-
derstand it consists in the application of heated air
which being generated and retained in the furnace
instead of escaping as formerly thereby quickens
the process and produces onc-tliird more pig iron
than heretofore.
