A time for Thanksgiving
By Bob Money
Linden church of Christ
On Dec. 4,1619, a group of 39 English settlers
arrived at Berkley Plantation on the James
River in Virginia. These brave pioneers dedi-
cated that day each succeeding year as an oc-
casion of thanksgiving unto God.
In 1621, the colony of settlers at Plymouth,
Mass., gave special thanks to God for having
spared them. They had buried half their small
band and at one point their daily ration of
corn dwindled to only five grains per person.
In 1862, in the midst of the bloody Civil War,
President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving to be
an annual national hohday.
God’s people have always given special
thanks to him for his blessings. Noah offered
sacrifices, thanking God for preserving his
family through the flood (Genesis 8:22). Moses
taught Israel to offer thank offerings to Jeho-
vah. David wrote, “Blessed be the Lord who
daily loadeth us with benefits” (Psalm 68:19
KJV). He also said, “It is a good thing to give
thanks unto Jehovah, and to sing praises unto
thy name, O Most High” (Psalm 92:1). Solomon
proclaimed, “Blessed be Jehovah, that hath
given rest unto his people Israel, according to
all that he promised: there hath not failed one
word of all his good promises, which he prom-
ised by Moses his servant: (1 Kings 8:56). Paul
wrote, “In everything give thanks: for this is
the will of God” (I Thessalonians 5:18).
There are many things for which we Ameri-
cans should be thankful.
* For our material blessings we should be
grateful. We should thank God for a wonder-
ful world that meets our every physical need.
“They shall be abundantly satisfied with the
fatness of thy house” (Psalm 36:8-9). Be grate-
ful for the abundant productivity of our land.
Our country has not known famine in over two
generations. In much of Africa, the per capita
income is some $600 per year. In Latin America
many yet hve on $1,200 per year. If your fami-
ly earns above $40,000 annually you hve in the
upper 10 percent of the world’s economic stra-
ta. Be thankful for the technology that makes
life so pleasant and comfortable for us: our
modern transportation, hghting, heating and
cooling of our modern homes. Thank God for
automated tools and machines to do our work
such as washers, dryers, vacuums, tractors,
tillers, chainsaws and power mowers. All of
these are blessings many take for granted.
* Be thankful for life and health. God “him-
self giveth to all life and breath and all things”
(Acts 17:25). Thank God for modern hospitals,
for medications and surgery to cure or manage
our ailments and extend our lives. The average
hfe span in much of the third world is still in
the 40 year range. Give thanks for the wonder-
ful doctors that see to our health needs. There
is one doctor for 35,000 people in Africa. We hve
in a land free of the blight of the great conta-
gious diseases such as small pox, poho, chol-
era, etc. For that we should give thanks.
* Be thankful for the courageous men and
women of arms who stand between us and vi-
olent criminals and terrorists and protect us.
* Be grateful for our religious freedom which
allows us to serve God as we personally under-
stand the Scriptures to teach, without govern-
mental interference or persecution.
* We should be thankful for personal freedom
so we can think as we please, and be educated
where we desire. We can read what we wish
to read and speak our minds publicly without
fear of reprisal. We can work at the profession
we choose and hve where we wish to hve. We
can own our property and travel without re-
strictions. We can marry whom we wih.
* Besides ah of the above, we enjoy rich
spiritual blessings. For those we should give
thanks. For the knowledge of the Lord God
(Deuteronomy 10:17-18) and the knowledge of
his Son (John 3:16), we should be thankful. We
should be grateful for the Bible and the trans-
lations which help us understand it. Thanks
should be offered for our salvation and the
hope of heaven; for the church (Acts 20:28) and
the privileged of prayer.
Our thankfulness should not be limited to
one special day of the year. All men detest
an ingrate. He who can receive such wonder-
ful daily benefits and not be moved to thank-
fulness is an ingrate of the highest degree.
Let all people express their appreciation
unto Jehovah not just with words, but also
with lives that honor Him and benefit their
fellow-man.
