HIGHWAY SAFETY
STATE AMENDMENT
ELECTION
Bikers ‘Share the Road’
★ Motorcycle
awareness aims
to save lives
By CANDY McMICHEN
alvaradostar@thestargroup. com
What do you get when
you mix 50 bikers and a
precinct commissioner on
a Sunday afternoon?
Road safety for John-
son County motorists.
According to TxDOT,
392 motorcyclists (opera-
tors and passengers) were
killed in 2010, accounting
for 14 percent of the state's
traffic deaths. Fifty-six
percent of motorcyclists
killed were not wearing
helmets at the time of the
crash. The Texas Trans-
portation Institute's Cen-
ter for Transportation
Safety estimates that the
state’s motorcycle death
toll could double by 20 15
without an aggressive
public safety and aware-
ness campaign.

torcycle for years," County
Commissioner Jerry

Shanty Town to help provide for world hunger
By CANDY McMICHEN
alvaradostar@thestargroup. com
When Pastor David Falkenberg’s parishioners an-
swered the challenge to do something to help feed the
world’s starving, they looked toward something they had
plenty of—land.
Happy Hill Baptist Church has acres of unused pasture
around it’s church building and decided to build a shanty
town. With donated materials, more than 30 volunteers
constructed a third-world looking town next to their
church.

Board approves
language program
Teachers in Alvarado
ISD and all other school
districts in the state are
challenged daily with find-
ing creative ways to edu-
cate students - even if all
22 or 25 learn differently.
Many times teachers
supplement their lessons
with activities that reach
all student levels. Finding
ways to supplement les-
sons for bilingual classes,
especially at the secondary
level, can be very difficult.
But last week, the Al-
varado ISD Board of Trust-
ees did it’s best to make
sure it would be easier in
the future by purchasing
an online subscription to
Rosetta Stone.
“The Rosetta Stone
program is critically ac-
claimed and does a won-
derful job,” AISD Super-
intendent Chester Juroska
said. “It is widely used in
business and government be-
cause a student can learn the
language quickly.”
The language program
can be used for several pur-
poses, including bilingual
classes, foreign language
classes and even adult educa-
tion.
The school board also
filled a position that has been
vacant since the middle of
August when Chris Magee
was named the high school’s
new principal.
Brad Ransom was named
the district’s new director of
operations and will oversee
the maintenance and trans-
