NTTA clears last Chisholm Trail Parkway hurd e
Bond sale, TxDOT
loan agreement pave
way for construction
DAVE SORTER

The final hurdle before construc-
tion of the Chisholm Trail Parkway
can begin in earnest occurred last
Thursday when the North Texas
Tollway Authority board approved a
bond sale to fund the toll road.
In addition, the NTTA added the
27.6-mile road from Interstate 30 in
Fort Worth to U.S. 67 in Cleburne
to its Special Projects System and
approved a toll equity loan agree-
ment with the Texas Department of
Transportation, according to TxDOT
spokesperson Jodi Hodges.
“The drivers of Fort Worth and
Johnson County have waited for this
much-needed thoroughfare. Today’s
green light by the board allows the
project to move into full construc-
tion,” said NTTA Chairman Kenneth
Barr, “The successful collabora-
tion with TxDOT demonstrates our
shared commitment to delivering a
north-south corridor in Tarrant and
Johnson counties with the promise
of improved mobility and accelerated
economic development.”
The parkway is designed to relieve
traffic on Interstate 35W from down-
town Fort Worth to Burleson and
State Highway 174 from Cleburne
through Joshua to Burleson. The toll
road is an extension of SH 121, which,
when complete, will be a tollway or
freeway from Cleburne to Melissa in
northern Collin County.
‘This is an exciting day for John-
son and Tarrant counties,” state Rep.
Rob Orr, R-Burleson, said. ‘The ap-
proval of the NTTAboard of directors
to direct its staff to proceed with the
sale of bonds to finance the Chisholm
Trail Parkway followed by the finan-
cial close moves this project into the
final phase leading to construction.
We now anxiously await the ground-
breaking on the central section of the
roadway.”
Construction is expected to begin

Lorene England goes to Michigan to finish first marathon
Husband Michael surprises her
with plane tickets and race entry
PAUL GNADT
keenestar@thestargroup. com
A Keene woman who ran
her first marathon Sunday
wasn’t surprised to finish,
only surprised to start.
Lorene England, the
fourth-grade teacher at
Keene Adventist Elementary
School, completed the Con-
cord Marathon in her home-
town of Concord, Mich.,
about 35 miles southeast of
Battle Creek. Although an
avid runner, it was her first
marathon and the first time
she had returned to Concord
since she was born.
It was her husband’s idea.
“I read there was a mara-
thon on Oct. 9 in Concord,”
said Michael England, pro-
fessor of education at South-
western Adventist Univer-
sity and also an avid runner.
“Lorene had a long weekend
with Columbus Day, so I
booked flights to Detroit and
surprised her by saying, Why
not do your first marathon
in the town where you were
born?”’
Lorene was skeptical be-
cause she hadn’t trained past
eight miles since June, but
Michael said he would run
with her using a walk/run
format.
‘The weather was perfect,”
Michael said. “They were
having an ‘Indian summer’
for the marathon weekend.
We couldn’t have scripted
better weather - 53 degrees
at the start and 78 degrees
when we finished.”
The first seven miles of the
marathon route was along
the Falling River nature trail.
“As the wind blew ever
slightly, the colorful leaves
were falling on us like rain,”
Michael said.
The remainder of the
course was rolling hills on
packed gravel country roads,
he said.
“We disciplined ourselves
to run for a mile, then walk
for two minutes to conserve,
along with eating 100 calo-
ries every 30 minutes,” Mi-
chael said.
At mile 16, the top of Mi-
chael’s calves starting cramp-
ing and he told Lorene to go
on using the same walk/run
strategy, he said.
While Michael walked the
final eight miles, Lorene —a
cancer survivor — finished
the 26.2 miles in 4 hours, 38
minutes to take second place
in her age group.
“We have only regret,” Mi-
chael said. “Wd didn’t wear
our Texas Rangers jerseys
for the race. Too many Tigers
fans.”
Keene residents Lorene and Michael England stand Sunday
at the finish line of the Concord Marathon in Concord, Mich.,
Lorene's hometown. It was Lorene's first marathon.
