New Animal Disease Traceability System
By Cody Maxwell, M.S.
Delta/Franklin Counties
Agriculture Extension Agent
Cattle producers across
the state are becoming aware
of the new Animal Disease
Traceability system that will
be implemented in Texas.
If you are unaware of this
system, beginning January
1, 2013, sexually intact adult
cattle that change ownership
must be identified through a
tagging system. The tagging
system has been set in place to
trace transmittable diseases.
Many people are jumping to
a conclusion that they have to
immediately have their herd
tagged. Technically, that is
not the case. To receive in-
depth general information
about the tagging system, visit
the website http://tahc.state,
tx.us. The new tagging system
pertains to producers selling
breeding age cattle by private
treaty.
To better help you as a
producer understand the
stipulations of the implemented
system, I will help make you
aware of those circumstances.
Sexually intact adult beef
cattle of 18 months or older
that are intended to be sold
for breeding purposes need
to be tagged. Also, Mexican
influenced event cattle are
required to be tagged. Cattle
that are exempt from this
program include nursing
calves, steers, spayed heifers,
bulls under 18 months, and
heifers less than 18 months.
I would make the suggestion
that if you are a producer and
do not castrate your bull calves,
but sell them at a sale bam for
slaughter/market purposes,
you do not have to have those
calves tagged.
Make note that if you are
a producer who does not sell
cattle via private treaty, this
really will have no effect
on your cowherd or tagging
system.
If you have any questions
pertaining to the Animal
Disease Traceability System
that has been implemented
by the Texas Animal Health
Commission, visit the website
or call the Extension Office at
903-395-4400 ext. 230. If you
are a producer who needs tags
to sell intact males or females
intended for breeding purposes,
I do have the tags that you will
need at the Extension Office.

redistributing funds to help
pay for the costs.
Attorney Garrett reported on

Emergency Management Co-
ordinator Jack Kiley reported
back from the Emergency drill
held Monday afternoon.
“It went well. We dispersed
medicines during the drill to
156 homes in an hour,” said Ki-
ley. There was a bit of a change
of plans due to the downed
power line far West Dallas Av-
enue near the Dollar General. It
sparked a small grass fire near
but was quickly under control
and traffic was rerouted until
TXU could repair the line acci-
dently hit by a semi truck trav-
eling through the area.
Judge Reed gave his Justice
of the Peace report saying he
had 31 new cases involving
minors with alcohol or tobac-
co. He said he is looking into
more alcohol awareness pro-
grams to address the issue and
not ignore it.
