Obituaries
Mary Lowry
Tompkins
In 1929, it took a train, a
bus, and a mail truck to get
Mama T. from her hometown
of Cooper, Texas, all the
way down to her first school
teaching job in Junction.
This adventurous young
chemistry teacher dazzled
her students with her detailed
knowledge of automobile
mechanics, played the piano
for Rotary Club on Friday’s,
and launched her impressive
forty-year teaching career
in fine style. A gifted pianist
who joyfully played her
whole life long for church,
family, and friends, at the
age of 96 she could still belt
out, “That’s the Glory of
Love” with enthusiasm. Love
marked the whole Mama T’s
life. Born December 5, 1911,
into the loving family of
David and Lula Lowry, she is
predeceased by both parents
and her siblings Weldon and
Oscar Lowry, Mildred Ewell,
and Nell Smith. Love carried
her through a wonderful
52 year marriage with the
late Dan Tompkins and her
parenthood of their two
children, Dan Tompkins Jr,
of Los Altos, Ca., and Mary
Harris of Dallas, Sally Falwell
and husband Craig Falwell of
Steamboat Springs Co.,David
Tompkins of San Francisco,
Ca., and Jason Agnetti of
Temecula, Ca., as well as two
great-grandchildren and a
host of nieces and nephews.
During the past decade, she
was devotedly cared for by
her “best friend” Beatrice
Jones, as well as Vera Webb,
Patrice Weaver and Marshella
Atkins, to whom her family
members are forever grateful.
Faith under girded Mama
T’s daily life and helped her
through every challenge and
struggle, which threatened
her. “Remember,” she always
used to say, “we can do all
things through Christ, who
strengthens us”. Her faith
carried her grace through

_By John & Elizabeth Hopkins_
Here we are starting the
first full week of yet another
new year. (Seems like I say
that WAY too often, doesn’t
it?) Do you still make
New Year’s resolutions? I
don’t make a list anymore
because I can never keep all
of them. But I try to think
of one thing that will make
a difference and do that. It
seems easier to concentrate
on one thing only. Besides,
I can’t remember a list for a
whole year anyway!
Phillip and Allie Stone
had a visit on Saturday from
grandson “little” Roger
Stone who lives in the Maud
area. Other visitors this week
included daughter Sharon
Jordan and son Glen Stone.
Patricia Blundell joined
aunts Alice Moore and
Joyce Toles and niece Anna
Flannagan for a girls day
out Sunday. They went
to Mesquite for lunch and
walked around two stories
of Town East Mall before
returning home.
Cindy Anderson says she
is now Officer in Charge at
the Lake Creek post office
for a while. She is replacing
Linda Baker who recently
retired as Postmaster there.
George and Pearl Foster
enjoyed visiting with their
granddaughter Jennifer while
she was home from college.
Stella Martin said her
family celebrated great-
granddaughter Brionna’s 18th
birthday on Sunday. The
group went to Commerce for
a Mexican dinner and then
back to Billy’s home for a
visit. Stella’s other visitors
this week were Travis and his
friend Dusty, Billy Joe and
his friend who stopped by
after their hunt, and Joe Bill
and Lorene Martin.
Earl and Maggie Thomas
assisted Bob and Diane Lewis
with a surprise birthday
brunch on Christmas Eve
morning. The event honored
Larry Maynard whose actual
birthday was Jan. 1.
Earl and Maggie joined
Larry and Brenda’s daughters
Pan and Julie and their
spouses Ruben and J.P for
a packing party on Friday.
They packed up Larry and
Brenda’s household things
in preparation for their move
to the parsonage at New Life
Baptist Church in Cooper.
Larry preached his first
sermon as pastor there on
Sunday. On Sunday night,
Larry and Brenda’s son-in-
law J.P. Jobe was ordained
as minister of the gospel.
The ordination service was
performed at New Beginnings
in Sulphur Springs and was
conducted by a pastor/friend
from J.P.’s youth. J.P. is
currently pastor of Lake
Cypress Baptist Church
near Mt. Vernon. A finger-
food fellowship honored
J.P. and Julie following the
ceremony.
