Red Riter Volpsteess SeTeral of
these men have got home. Two companies
of twelve months rangers wore received from
the Regiment and the remainder discharged
We understind that the services of all were
tendered jjr iwelve months but were not
wanted.
We sec in the items of news from the
main army some-speculations upon a report
of Monterey being taken by sorjie adyentu
turers in anticipation of the movement of tbe
main a'myj which report however the writer
discredits; puling more faith jn the statement
that some Texans had been at tbe 1'rrstdio
Rio Grande. Tbe writer was correct in hi
judgment between the reports. CoJ. Harney
with the Red River men and some rangers
trora Austin went to the Jrcidjo to attack a
Mexican force said tu be there. The Alex
icans got ''item" of their coming and report
jng tbe force of TOO mounted gunmen to be
4.000 men with several piece of artillery.de
pamped suddenly.
Our men fbtdtd the Rio Grande took a
quiet and leisurely took at tbe Presidio
which they say is a cleanly and pleasant look
ing placejstaying nvefiaysaaathen re-crossed
the river to- the eastern bank. Orders
were then received Irorn Gen. Taylor to
" march their ran to S.in Antonio and all b m
three companies left to guard the crossing
for a few days marched ofF. A day or two
after this a boat with etjit men was sent
over o purchase some provisions. These
were procured aad tbe mn hd started on
their return when a body of aboa't 200 1
Mexicans came down to the bank j
and firing upon them killed three of the
eight. The others taking tp tbe water.
got back to camp though two of lhfs werejferthe publication of it in the newspapers
wounded oefore leaving the boat. The merH
killed were Reed and Pewiu of Fansui-anlj
Riddle of San Antonio.
The river being swolloi. rapidand unfenKj
able at (he time our troops couU not got-
over tp repay the butcherr; but com in speed a
firing from the brink which was ineOcctutJ
from the distance
The next day the remaining companies
moved back to San Antonio.
Some reference having been made by-bur
Correspondent to a dispute between Colonel
Young of our County and Cplooel Harney
relative to Col. Young's command it is
proper to state that the difference was'dect-
ded by General Wool in Colonel Yjoung'a
favor.
Since writing the above we Jcarn that the
'wo ranging companies cut of our regiment
were not received.
Gexehal Gaixes. The court of En.
quiry sitting upon the conduct of General
Gaines in assuming the responsibility of
receiving and forwarding troops to Genera'
Taylor have decided that his conduct in that
particular prior to the 16th of May at which
time the news of the victories of the Sth and
9th was received was correct but that
thej
vasjPi!
receiving of volunteers after that lime was
unauthorised. The court recapitulates the
facts as found on examination of the evi-
dence and makes its comments' at length ex-
pressing the belief that throughout in lhat
which was authorized as well as in that
which was pot tbe course of Gen. Gaines
was prompted by patriotic motives.
The President' of the United States in
reviewing tho report agrees with the com-
rnittee but at tbe same lm reprehends such
Hjsjim.ptiops of responsibility as.rjnrifcessary
and dangerous and dispenses with the -far
iher action of the tpnrt
Chihuahua ExPEDiTioKeWhen the

it was understood lhat Gen. Wool4 withorae

to Chihuahua.
We supposo before this General Taylor

pSTijE Laws. A communication Aom the
Secretary of State of Texas respecting the
transmission of the volumes of lows will be
found m our columns. We understand that
Lieet-Mosely btwfsht two copies home
with m Wc do not know whether other
copies have gotinlo the district.
Wbat beautiful idea is this of being go-
verned fey laws which weJtavc not seen and
punished lor the contravention of statutes
never promulgated !
Was there over any thing more despotic.
and at the sense time more absurd than this)
This age of republican freedom has wit
nested soror rich illustrations of its progress!
We will do oar best to prevent our friends
from being punished for "ignorance of the
Ihw. (which) excused! no man" by publish
mg these of mot general beating as fast as
we can with reasonable regard to our othe
duties as a pvblic journalist; but we must co
be blamed
if we are seemingly tardy in the
ubheauan. for
the wisdom of Texas has
taken a aovel turn.
The convention which
framed tbe ronsmittiaa was too sstarl to pay
of tie State so that all who were to be go-
verpad by it-migbi know its previsions; and
hundred if not thousands voted for it who
bad never the opportunity to read it. Our
legislature folknriifg so illustrious an ex.
ample were not willing to pay for (be gene-
ral promulgation of the laws They pro-
vided for their publication in pamphlet form
hy which all county officers get copi? tone
tine or other; bwt those who created tbe
county officers arc not thus privileged.
Unless newspaper publishers stare coa-
sidtrnie than legislators are willing to pub-
lish them without remuneration the veorle
en. tfdise go without them 1

f" Cotto. From actual observation and
reliable rrport we ate enabled to slate the
probable crop ol this district.
In Fannin the crop has been injured by
the worm one half. In Li mar one half
neither of these counties planting much. In
Red River the crop Iras been injured one-
third in Bowie one fourth.
So far as we are able to judge the worms
have done less damage io this d strict than in
most other of the cotton pJarrtieg region of
the Union.

markabie for their succinct energy and the
absence of those verbore and grandiloquent
Istrains which we are accustomed to meet
with in narratives of American exploits He
writes like a ron of sense skill and courage;
and wc hce not the slightest with to detract

originated the behavior of the American
General and his troops deserves to be judged
of by a mesh higher standard than tne policy
of the Gj3Ternine8t-whicfa it is their (fifty to

on the contrary demonstrates the utter in

it degrades the descendants of tbe Spanish

Is my Sophronia here no more
But on that fair celestial shore.
United with that happy throng
To sing with angels' the victorious song
Farewell Sophronia O farewell
A sad adieu hare to tell
To your dear friends so far from yon
They'll sty akts! alas! farewell adieu.
Our little babe I'm'training here
How to meet it's mother dear
Far beyond the realms above
To sing whh you eternal love.
My cheek is'pale; ray tearsiflow Jbjt
For memory dwells upon ihe past
I could no if I would forget
That all my fondest hopes are set.
My hopts alas ! they once were bright
And all ray visions were as light
As yonder brilliant lonely star
That beams so lovely from afar.
My brow is sad my heart is crushed
And its wild throbs will sown be bushed
My heart is broke and nought can save
Me from a cold and early grave.
