From all that I can learn as to similiar de-

be the richest placer mines in the world.

a large number of facts from which the fol-

Temptation to Rohticrs and Assassins. In
llic solitary recesses of the Sierra Nevada
arc litttle clusters of men with nothing but
the trees lor their cov oi nig and no protec-
linn but their own vigilance and strcntl:
Many of these people arc known to possess
very large amounts of gold (sometimes $'2i)-
0i)0) wrapped in their blankets where there
is no eve to see and u agent t pursue the
guilty. Is it strange when the temptation
w so great that the robber ami assassin
btiould be abroad among the mountains? M;i-

alicady to have occured; but little attention
is excited ny utcse events wnere an arc in
the eager pursuit of wealth. No one can

All splits of labor is got at enormous rates
of compensation. Common clerks and sales

until a few weeks since was a private of x-ol-unteers
and I am now paying him S 1500

al others from S 1200 to 1300! 1 fortunately
liaxc an Indian boy or 1 should be forced to
clean my own boots for I could not employ
a good body servant for the amount of my
