The election' prescribed by the. State Constitution
for a seat of Government for the nejet tv.-untv vsak-j
being about to come on the undersigned proprie-
- tor of the locality generally known as the. Tawak--'-
anah Hill begs "leave to propose his place for the
consideration of the People of the State and set
before them its natural advantages and the induce-
ments which he oilers for their selection of it as
the Seat of the State Government.
There are several hills known as theTawakanah
hill but there is o:ie. at lite base of which the sub-
scriber now lives which by general consent ha
for a long period been recognised as a desirable lo-
cality for a Town both on account of its extent of
unbroken surface the springs upon :tnd around it
the rock with which it abounds and its convenience
to timber. The hill itself contains an area of some
-four hundred acres all of which except a reserva-
tion of twenty blocks to cover sales and settlements
heretofore made and expenses of publication your
petitioner tenders to the ue and benefit of the State
to be laid off in Town lots and sold. To this con-
tinuing the line of donation across the whole line
' of bin survey he adds enough more of land to
make the quantity of twelve hundred acres the
residue of which after defining the town lots being
laid oir in outlotsof from live to twenty acres and
being good fanning laud tiic whole will it is be-
lieved produce a sum. by its public sale more
than sufficient to cover all expenses of removing
the Government archives and fixtures and the e-
v x roction of better public buildings than are now at
Austin.
Rock the gray limestone lies in abundance upon
i and below the surface of the hills and in addition
to its usefulness for building material makes most
excollent Lime.
Cedar measuring forty and fifty feet to the body
V in length and two feet or more through may be
found in large quantities within two and one-half
miles of the place and at a distance of six miles
upon the Xavasoto there is enough to build cities.
Thirty miles distant is excellent Pine. Post Oak
Elm. Ash Walnut Cottonwood &c are to be
found within a mile of the place on the cast upon
Tawakanah creek and extending thence to the Trin-
ity thirty miles. To the west upon Elm and Pin
Oak creeks timber abounds commencing at a dis-
- tancc of two miles and at four miles being in
- dense bodies. Little skirts of timber upon branch-
es and ravines adjacent are not taken into calcu-
lation. Clav of the. best quality for brick is to be found
every where beneath the surface.
At the south base of the hill is a large Spring
affording nearly enough water to turn a mill during
all tke year which forms the source of Elm creek.
At the east base are two large springs within three
hundred yards of each other which form the sour-
ces of Tawakanah creek which empties into the
Trinity at Pine Hlulf. These Springs it is believed
would" amply supply with water a population of a
thousand persons. In addition to these however
there are ten or twelve more Springs around the
bill and it may properly be added that water is
procured by digging a few feet below the surface
anywhere fn the neighborhood and this water is
all good and healthful.
Of the remarkable health of the place not a
doubt can exist. The air is pure. There are no
marshy exhalations rising from any portion of the
country near it and every one knows that the hard
gray limestone water is pure and salubrious. In
addition to this the place has been settled for sev-
eral years and has proved itself from the experi-
ence of the residents entirely healthy.
The soil of the hill and surrounding region is of
the kind known as black sandy. It is remarkably
lively and productive and especially adapted to the
growth of vegetables and has a line red clay
foundation.
Pine BlufF thirty miles from Tawakanah upon
the. Trinity river is the. landing place for this point
and has been accessible for the past fourteen months
uninterruptedly. At tho time of writing a boat
is within a few miles of the Bluff. The road
to it from this place is direct and at all times
excellent without regard to the state of the weath

er and there is not a creek crossing it during the
whole distance.
The centrality of Tawakanah as regards the pop-
ulation of the State will be apparent to any one
who will look at De Cordova's late map. It is
more nearly equi distant from the inhabited coun-
ties than any other locality which is in.olher re-
spects suitable. The region around it is fertile
and susceptible of dense settlement. Above it lie
the well populated counties of the North. Kat
and North East of it for the past two years popu-
lation has come in more rapidly than to any oilier
portion ol the State. South and South East of it
are the old settled counties of Texas including
tin se comprised in Austin's Colony and immedi-
ately around it the new counties all give large
votes. West of it upon the l'ra.os. and the three
forks of Little Hiver. population iscominir in rapid
Iy. and new counties are being formi'd. It is farther
West than Washington. I'reuhain. or Matagorda
and nearly on a line with Port Cabalio. Indian
point Coiuiiibus.Iiulustry Franklin and Springfield.
It is confidently believed that no other locality in
the State combining so many advantages and at
the same time so generally convenient to the pup
ulatiou can be selected for its Capital and the un-
dersigned offers it. to the consideration of his fellow
citizens and solicits their suffrages in its behalf.
TheTawakanah Hills are in LimcMone county
forty miles from the Falls of the Brazos to which
poiat.lhe river will probably he navigable. They
are 10(1 miles from Washington: 150 from Bastrop:
Kit) from Columbus: l(5."i from Ciarksville : 150
from Bonham ; 85 from Huntsvillc: ISO from Hous-
ton : 05 from Palestine; 110 from Nacogdoches ;
150 from Austin : 2:10 from San Antonio : 1M) from
San Augustine: and 155 from Mar.-hall.
The advantage of having an entire Town site to
sell and thereby without extra taxation build per-
manent public tHiildings for the use of the Govern-
ment is an advantage offered by this site with
which no town now settled and partly sold can
offer equal competition. From a small body of
contiguous land the subscriber will derive his
profit in case of the locality of the Government
at this point; all the town itself (save the small les-
crvation mentioned.) and a large number of out lots
will be exclusively for the benefit of the Stale.
There is no doubt resting upon the title to the
land it having been patented to the subscriber by
the Mexican Government in 1835 as his own head-
right. JOHN BOYD.
Tawakanah December -Ult 18-10.
In addition to the above 1 have since executed
my bond for three hundred and twenty acres
also from my head-right survey and adjoining
the twelve hundred acres previously donated and
my neighbors Messrs. Wtiiie Piiii.w and Anderson
Caruthers and Laughlin.and Mr. Norvell of Sabine
county have donated tiikiiktikk'sam) mn: iil'xiikkii
acres" additional making in all FOUR THOU-
SAND EIGHT IIUNDI5FD acres of choice land
offered to the People of Texas as a locality upon
which to lay out a cily with contiguous out-lots
for residences and wood land. This offer com-
prises every thing desirable for health and con-
venience added to great beauty of prospect.
The land of Messrs. White. Pillow and Ander-
son lies immediately adjoining the hill tract and
runs along nearly the full length of the western
line of the twelve hundred acres offered by me so
that the two tracts would be in a body. It is choice
land affording many beautiful residences.
The donation of Mr. Norvell lies immediately
adjoining my survey and not over a quarter of a
mile from the donation which I offer.
The land of Mr. Caruthers is two miles and a
half from the hill and is rich.
The land of Mr. Laughlin. is ten miles from the
hill ; rich and well timbered.
Appended arc the certificates of the County
Clerks of Limestone and Navarro counties show-
ing that the several bonds for donation are on re-
cord with large penalties in case of non compli-

THE YEAR EIGHTEEN HUNDRED AND

wonderful unexpected and astounding political and

From Dr. Wm. T. Prentiss:
Mr. Bull: In regard to your Sarsaparilla I will
say that I have used it to some extent in Cutaneous
Affections of long standing as Tinea Capetis Pro-
riasis Scabies Syphilitic Cachexia and in ll dis-
eases where the indication of cure seems to consist
in a thorough change or modification oj the fluids of
the body with considerable success in conjunction
with local treatment. I think I would prefer it to
any other preparation of Sarsaparilla in use and
any phjsiciau will admit its value upon learning the
substances that enter into its composition.
