Man Celebrates Life, Community In Canton
Mickey, as he is
known by his friends,
moved to Canton in 1969
at 16, with his parents Ed
and Ruth Cox, sister
Deborah and brother
Tim. It didn’t take long
for him to acquire mul-
tiple friends. His amazing
smile and delightful per-
sonality opened doors
immediately.
Despite the fact that
Mickey has Down Syn-
drome, also known as
Trisomy 21, his percep-
tion of people is as pure
as the Lord he serves; he
loves them all. He never
met a person he didn’t
like. Canton was just an-
other open door for shar-
ing that love.
In those days Canton
boasted many wonderful
establishments run by
precious people. Butch
Hilliard owner of
Hilliard Hardware,
Jimmy Burroughs owner
of the Ben Franklin
Store, Ronnie Turner
who worked the pay-
ment window of Texas
Electric, the checkers at
Piggly Wiggly and
Shinn’s grocery all
shared their friendship
with Mickey.
Whenever mom came
to town to shop or pay
bills it was Mickey who
confidently stepped out
of the car with his billfold
in his pocket or the bill
and check in his hand.
One of his favorite
moments was when
“friend Butch” would
say, “Mickey lets go get
a coke” and off they
would go to the City
Cafe on the square.
However, Mickey’s ad-
venture usually got
stalled by a stop at Ben
Franklin where Butch
egged on a fake pat down
or hold up perpetrated
on the always compliant
Mr. Jimmy.
Once the coke money
was acquired off the
three would go to share
a few raucous moments
with the “old timers” at
the cafe. Sometimes add-
ing to the fun were
former Van Zandt
County Sheriff B.W.
Ward or former Canton
Chief of Police Hoss
Williams getting in on the
activity. Mickey loved it
all and lots of laughter
filled Canton on those
days.
Mickey loves to sing,
and even though his
words are hard for those
who don’t know him to
understand his heart can
always be heard. While
he was able he worked
with his sister and
brother-in-law doing
whatever church ministry
they were involved in,
but he would especially
shine when he was asked
to sing a special.
There was never a dry
eye in the house when
Mickey finished his ren-
dition of “Amazing
Grace” or “How Great
Thou Art.” Even now he
sits every night and sings
with his favorite group,
the Statler Brothers, on
his karaoke machine. He
loves an audience and
really puts on a show
when he ends a song.

parents when he
was born. They
chose to keep him
at home and their
decision has
brought much
joy to all who
know him.
Even though
he can’t get out
much anymore
he is still a joy to
all who attend
him from the kind
ladies at Walmart,
his nurses and
doctors to his
church, his family and
friends. For the most part
he has led a quiet unno-
ticed life by the world’s
standards but in Canton,
Mickey Cox was and still
is well recognized.
People get excited
when someone impor-
tant or influential moves
into their town. They roll
out the red carpet and
strike up the band. Ev-
eryone who is anyone
comes out to shake their
hand and offer them the
key to the city.
Sometimes, however,
a special person enters
without anyone’s recog-
nition and no one per-
ceives that “greatness” in
the form of “goodness”
is walking among them,
but such is not the case
in Canton, where
Mickey Cox still loves
and lives.
