VZC Veterans Memorial To Receive
Matching Funds From CEDC
By Julie Vaughan
Editor
A gift to the Van Zandt
County Veterans Memo-
rial Plaza will be twice as
nice because for every
dollar donated now
through March 31,2013,
the Canton Economic
Development Corpora-
tion will match it.
During a special called
meeting, the CEDC
board met in executive
session, and then voted
in open session, to give
the Veterans Memorial
Board a dollar for every
dollar they received up to
$4,000. '
Although the memorial
board, represented by
Red Montgomery, re-
quested $5,000 to help
with the restoration of the
Coast Guard boat, he
said whatever they re-
ceive will be appreciated.
“I gave you an esti-
mated cost of what we
believe it would cost to
place the boat in the
ground completely fin-
ished,” Montgomery said
during his presentation.
“All of the money we
spend is very well docu-
mented,” he continued.
“We can’t go out and
spend $10 here and $20
there. It has to be ap-
proved by the board be-
fore we spend any
money. These verbal
bids for doing this are
what it is - $8,415.”
Montgomery ex-
plained that the approxi-
mately 26,000-pound
boat, once refurbished,
will be lowered into the
ground slightly.
It will sit in a cradle

The Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial received a generous offer of a matching grant from the
Canton Economic Development Corporation after they requested money to help refurbish the Coast
Guard boat. Currently, the boat sets unfinished at the Veterans Memorial Plaza due to a lack in
funding.

City 'To Rent
Temporary
Building For
Offi.ce Space
By Julie Vaughan

Temporary housing for city offices will be set up
soon, after the Canton City Council voted to lease a
building until plans can be made for a new city hall.
In early November, an 18-wheeler slammed into
the side of the Canton City Office Complex (COC)
after the driver who, was traveling eastbound on State
Highway 64, attempted to miss an SUV that pulled
out into oncoming traffic on Van Zandt County Road
4126.
The loaded rock truck struck the COC on the east
side, catching the structure on fire.
Fortunately no city employees were injured, but
the COC was a total loss.
Canton Mayor Cary Hilliard later reported that all
personnel files were saved and as much as 80 per-
cent of the documents that were in the COC were
saved with some extent of smoke damage.
Since then, city staff has temporarily moved into
offices behind the COC but, due to a need for more
office space, the city council has been discussing
options on replacing city hall.
The council has now voted to lease a 14-by-70
building from Williams Scotsman, Inc. for 18 months
at a cost of $13,304 which includes set up.
Hilliard said the building will include an ADA
(Americans with Disabilities Act) restroom facility,
coffee bar, open reception area and three offices.
He said the mobile office will be moved in next to
the old COC, and a deck along with a ramp will be
constructed for customers to walk up to the office.
The city will also have to run phone lines, water
and sewer lines to the temporary office space as well.
