LAW ENFORCEMENT
Managing Walmart
By JAY HINTON
crowleystar@thestargroup. com
Since Walmart opened on
March 14, the Crowley Police
Department has responded to
more than 60 calls from theft
to fights to aggravated robbery
to car accidents.
Crowley Police Chief Kirk
Nemitz isn’t surprised by the
amount of calls his depart-
ment has received.
“We knew there would be,”
he said.
Prior to Walmart’s open-
ing, the Crowley PD did its
homework by calling the
Benbrook and Burleson po-
lice departments to see how
many calls they were receiving
each month at their respective
Walmarts.
In a three-month period,
they were averaging 30 cases
a month.
As expected the major-
ity of the cases have been for
theft, and through June 24,
the Crowley PD has made 12
arrests.
“The professional criminals
- the ones that do this kind of
thing for a living - they’re go-
ing to go to the newer stores
and check them out,” Nemitz
said. “We had a zero-tolerance
policy when it first opened. We
wanted to put a shot across the
bow and let everyone know
that we weren’t going to toler-
ate even petty thefts.”
The first arrest was a
27-year-old Joshua woman
in mid-April for taking more
than $100 of merchandise.
In late May a Joshua man
was arrested for allegedly pull-
ing a pocket knife on Walmart
employees while allegedly

Lt. Fleming
fired Monday
By JAY HINTON
crowleystar@thestargroup. com
Crowley police Lieutenant Bud Flem-
ing was fired Monday for a “conduct issue”
Crowley Police Chief Kirk
Nemitz confirmed Tues-
day night.
Fleming’s firing came
after month-long investi-
gation by Nemitz.
“The conduct was se-
vere enough that it justi-
fied termination,” Nemitz
said.
Nemitz couldn’t com-
ment on the specifies of
Fleming’s termination.
According to Nemitz, Fleming has 10
business days to appeal the decision to
Crowley City Manager Alan Grindstaff, who
can overturn the chief s decision.
Fleming had been with the department
for 13 years and was a lieutenant for the last
three years.

By BRIAN PORTER

CLEBURNE - A planned exit strategy,
heeding to voters’ support for commission-
er-elect Kenny Howell, led Troy Thompson
to a decision to resign his appointed position
as Johnson County Precinct 2 commisioner,
he told members of commissioner’s court
Monday.
It marks the second resignation of a Pre-
cinct 2 commissioner in less than a year.
Thompson was appointed to the position
July 5, 2011, closing a nine-day search con-
ducted by County Judge Roger Harmon
among a field of 15 applicants for the posi-
