UsTSmic sccoml in importance to no place in the
West. Now gentlemen of the Convention
citizens of Arkansas and Texas docs any other
road present to yon such advantages Jrom its
connections as this? You have heard of the
project of a Kail road from New Orleans to i"t.
Louis through Arkansas; and its importance
has been held up to you by the gentleman from
Louisiana. "What advantage could that raid
present if finished which this one does not of-
tcr to vou in a greater decree: coiuciusns has
been said about a contest for commercial suprem-
acy between New York and New Orleans.
With all respect for the better judgment of un
friend irom Louisiana 1 think that jiution is
settled. AVlieu we see New Yoik turning the
Mfes. upstream and taking from N. Orleans the
wealth that enriched her for so niauv years; and
when we see her also taking produce from the
seaports of Texas just under tlie suns ot New
Orleans; wc cannot longer doubt the result.
Then what advantage 1 again ask will result
from a road across vuur borders from New Or
leans to St. Louis? V.'iien you get upon the
31iss. at Memphis 3-011 command the market . -of
both these cities. And if both raids were
completed ami a citizen of Little l!-ck or Ar-
kansas or Texas desired to go east lie would
surety never go by N. Orleans or by St. Jmis
when he has a Hail Itocitl leading by tin' most
direct and sliortctt fine to the great Atlantic ci-
ties and Europe. In the winter .-ea.-ou he would
avoid the northern line and in the summer sea-
son he would amid the southern olc even if
thev were as sh-rt and as direct as the middle
one". And another reason for avoiding the nor-
thern line at all times is that it runs through
Ohio and other free States; in the first named of
which stealing slaes is lollowed as a matter of
rirofit as well as of fanaticuiit.
4Tis time the south the slave Suites were
building rail roads to the Atlantic iriUiin ticir
virn limth ana thus bund tip their own zcti-
2ort$. 15ut as a market for your produce Memphis
often presents marked advantages. When there
you have the benefit of the N. Orleans ii.istou
and Ohio river markets; and it is well known
that these latter never buy lower down than
Memphis.
Often too sir. as my friend on my right (turn-
ing to the Kev. 1 A. Owen) who is one of our
leading merchants will testily e.ntou goes up a
half cent or a cent ab ive N. Orle ins prices in
Memphis on account of positive and perempuny
orders from the Ohio river factories which must
be filled at once on account of extreme low water
or an impending closing up of ihc Ohio from ice.
These are facts familiar to cur Tennessee and
Mississippi planters; aud three-fourths of the
ISOjOOO bales of cotton brought to 3!empliis the
past year were sold oft" the wagons; for the far-
mer thus did his own business avoided all ex
pense of storage drayuge &c. .Vc and received
the money himself. When at Memphis with
your produce you can go north south or east
and arc confined to no market.
Go to New Orleans and you must take the
market there ruliog without a choice of any oth-
er. "
These Mr. President and goutL-mca of Ar-
kansas and Texas are some of the reasons de-
manding 3-nnr whole energies in this noble work.
Hut you will a-k what will Alemphi- Jo towards
it? 1 might answer by asldng what offer of as-
sistance have you had ironi Nw Orleans or St.
Louis for the road ting tdk ol? Now sir.u hat
says Memphis the little city of Memphis with
a populaticii of about lo.UOl) ouls? What does
tJie my to yn? She is aware that til's road
will greatly benefit her and she is nit niggard
yg; her policy. She sends to this intelligent con-
vention this assurance (holding up the letter ad-
'drcsscd by many leading citizens of Memphis to
ihe convention) that when the lead shall be rea-
dy for the iron Memphis will farniJt cnoegh to
lay the first fifty m 7as if it. This is the greeting
she sends to Arkansas and Texas. (This dicfa-
ratiun ofJIr. Trczcrant brought down thtltouse
in decji aud enthusiastic ojiplansr.")
