the hctual crop will turn out. Georgia furnishes two hundred
and twenty millions of pounds and her crop is only exceeded by
one State. If tho whole crop of Georgia 550000 bales could
pilly be brought to her own seaport Savannah would be second
only to Now Orleans in amount of receipts and exports.
'EC!3 Every pound weight of cochineal contain 70000 insects
steamed to death ; so that Ihe annual sacrifice of m3ectual life to
procure our. scarlet and crimson dyes amounts to about 40000000
of these small mcmbers'of the creation.
.
tCr Richter says "No man can either live piously or die
-righteous. without a wife." Avery wicked old bncholor of our
. acquaintance says. to this "Of yes 1. sufferings and severe trials
purify and. chasten the heart." t
. i
tdr Tho editor of an exchango says he never saw but one
"frhost and'that.was the -ghost of a sinner who died without pay-
-mg for 'his paper. "'Twas horrible to look upon ;the ghost of
Hamlet was no circumstance to it." .
Texas Cattle Trade with Now Orleans.
' Tho steamship Palmetto left Galveston for New Orleans says
the News on. tho 17th instant having on board about 40 or 50
head of cattle from Houston. The cattle trade of Houston will
. probably be prosecuted in this way; first by river steamers to this
jjlace tmd then by reshipmont onseaboats to N. Orleans. The
charge wo understand is '$1 50per head from Houston to Gal-
veston and $00 from Galveston to New Orleans. The charge
from Houston direct to Now Orleans by tho Ogden wo learn was
one half ofAhe net proceeds of tho whole. The present charge is
certainly much lower. If this business is to be conducted ton a
largo scale. we should think there would still bean additional
saving by driving the cattle to Virginia or Bolivar Point where
they might be kept in good condition on pasturage till their ship-
ment. They could easily be brought- fronxeither of those Points
to Galveston in flatboats suitably constructed in a fow hours on
the day of tho boat's leaving for New Orleans ; and in this way
they would uufter but little over two days' confinement on a boat.
This would be asaving in the cost of transportation j.agreat sav-
ing in tho usual loss and a saving in the superior quality and
prico oC the beef in the New Orleans market- "
tCr Mr R.. Hunt at the Royal Institution London states that
a friend of his has succeeded in obtaining a minute tljough weigh-
ablo portion of gold from a. quantity of tho petals of tho blue vio-
let.
P3" Of all the; members of the French Provisional Government
of 1848Lamartine and Cromieux alone are now in tho Assembly!.
All tho others are in disgrace or exile.
