Walking
With Bob
by Bob Moore, Canton
Go big time
Back in 2006, Gracie
and I moseyed and
sashayed about a half hour
every day. That is about a
23 or 24 minute mile.
Pretty slow but better than
cuddled in my Lazy Boy
eating a big bowl of ice
cream smothered in choco-
late symp.
The local Main Street
program had a 5K which
is a big deal if you had
never been in such an event.
If you’re not familiar with
the distance of a 5K, it’s 3.1
miles long. The brochure
encouraged walkers as well
as runners to come out for
some fun. My neighbor in-
sisted that I take Gracie. We
all got T-Shirts for partici-
pating in the event and
Gracie got a bright red ker-
chief. We were down at the
courthouse ready to roll and
I was scared to do “this
thing” at 74 years of age
walk a 5K
and in the shape I was in
at the time.
It was exhausting just
looking at the route map.
The course weaved
around the courthouse,
then up to College Street
and Cherry Creek Park.
It then went around the
new path at the park and
past Lakeside Church
and down Hwy 64. The
course then went up a
few side streets then back
to the courthouse and
across the finish line.
The runners lined up.
Some even had their kids
and dogs with
them. They were laugh-
ing, stretchingjumping
up and down, hugging,
and I was scared and
ready to quit before I
got started.
Then the big loud
horn blew, the siren on
the motorcycle blared

out, and the cheers of the
“watchers and lookers” all
went off causing Gracie to
pull on the leash and away
we went. We were dead
last by the time we arrived
on College Street. To add
insult to injury, a neighbor
grabbed Grade’s leash,
took her to our back door,
gave her a drink of water,
brought her back to me
and I had gone maybe 100
feet in the interim. I was
too confused to quit.
You have no idea how
far it seemed to Cheery
Creek Park. We turned
into the park where kids
were passing out cold
drinks. They started cheer-
ing us on. It is about a half
mile around the park. It felt
like miles, but it was pretty
and beginning to become
fun. Gracie was prancing
and showing out. People
lining the street were
cheering us on. Everybody
else had already gone by.
It seemed like hours when
we saw the Courthouse in
sight. Oh yes, we were
the last ones to finish, but
we were cheered on like
champions. It was an ex-
perience we all should
have. We finished in one
hour and 10 minutes.
I will do a 5K about
every month this
year. Gracie and I have
met fantastic walkers
and runners with great
stories. It is a fantastic
feeling. Today I do a 16
to 18 minute mile. The
time isn’t as important as
the 5K. It is a goal. It is
a reason to say “Live to-
day as my last. Plan for
tomorrow as forever.” I
invite everybody to set
a goal for yourself. It
could be a walk down
the street or around the
block. Or it could be
your very first 5K.
OK Gracie, let’s get
walking briskly.
